They went with songs to the battle, they were young.

Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.

They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,

They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,

We will remember them.

Well done that man! We should never forget the sacrifices of all of those involved in conflict…

…and thank God that our generation (generally) seems to have escaped the horrors of war.

I went to Belgium a couple of years ago and we did a tour around the WW1 cemeteries.

A truly moving experience. What hit you was not the sheer amount of headstones, but how many of them just had "Unknown soldier - Warwickshire (or similar) Regiment) because they couldn't identify the body other than the uniform they were wearing.

Lest we forget.

Arizona Memorial

Manila American Cemetery and Memorial

Arlington National Cemetery

All three very very moving places to visit and remembrances (among many others). No veteran should miss them, but that actually goes for everyone.

When Eisenhower was told by De Gaul he didn't want any part of NATO and to get all American servicemen out of France......He responded to De Gaul by asking if that included all the dead Americans buried in French soil.........

I haven't been able to find it via Google but I have a memory of a news report about a ceremony at the American cemetery in Manila in 1991 marking the closure of the American bases in the Philippines. As I remember it, the Admiral (Commander in Chief--Pacific Command) said that Americans would never leave the Philippines referring to the cemetery and those buried there and then saying that included his father.

It's a shame the US Government has forgotten.

Only the VFW and donations from around the World keeping the memory alive in Angeles City.
