:uh-uh: Was just browsing Emirates site and came across some dates where it is possible to fly A380 all the way to and from Bangkok-not too bad a fare at about £550.

I was looking at going out in May-would be a nice experience to sample the A380-good to see that it is not just London getting the choice-connect times are good also.Manchester departure is 14.10.

This will then give 2 daily A380 Flights.

Flown Emirates A380 loads of times, great aircraft IMHO. If Emirates still let you book them and they are available then pick seat 61A,or K, or 81A or K, best seats in economy. A380 upstairs in business, even better if funds allow.

I normally fly economy with Emirates or Qatar bur 18 months ago decided to splash out on Bizz class for the A380. In the lounge at Manchaster blagged a free upgrade for me and my mate to 1st class on the 1st leg, the 2nd leg was a dissapointment having being in 1st but its a great plane and a great way to set off the holiday

Darn you lucky bugger! I regularly fly Biz and never get an upgrade! Not sure if that is because I get cheap Biz class tickets, the fact that my carriers don't use First from Manchester, or that I am a scruff when I get on at Bangkok! I must admit the Biz lounges at Manchester for Etihad are very nice too.

This was 1st time I had ever gone Bizz class and 1st time in bizz class lounge. We got to lounge fairly early and about 4th people in, as we were checking into lounge I was laughing and joking with the girls behind the counter (I would imagine most bizz class punters seasoned travellers/workers who treat this as normal so dont bother with the chit chat) whereas to me its was an exciting start to the holidays.

I said something along the lines of 'if you can't fill 1st class we won't be offended if you ask us to move there, don't worry we will keep it quiet as dont want to upset the riff raff'. I also mentioned that we normally go Qatar but wanted to try out the A380

About 30 mins before boarding we got the call to reception as asked if we wanted the free upgrade on the 1st leg as not full, but to keep quiet as they had regular bizz class people in the lounge who they wouldnt be upgrading. This was not a problem

Are you a member of the Emirates FF programme ? If so when booking what 'status' did you hold ? Can you also confirm notification of upgrade to 1st

Class was from the Emirates lounge and not at check in or at the gate ?

I ask the questions because 'not doubting your blagged upgrade to 1st ' but even 'Gold' elite class have complained about the lack of upgrades on

the afternoon EK018 flight from Manchester.

Im shocked you could doubt that someone may put an untruth on this site 555

Not a member of the ff club as I said Inormally fly Qatar.

Im not sure how to add photos (computer skills suck) but will try

Had a go with the photos to no avail, got to go now but will read more info on how to post, if someone can let me know here to save me time please let me know but no biggie. For Brown150 I have photo of inside my pod which shows flight number on screen, my lunch (had to have caviar starter as they ran out of kebabs) and a couple of shower room.

You said other people complain of no upgrade, that will be why the girls asked us to keep quiet and not say anything. Must be my winning personality

For the benefit of Brown150. Hopefully the photos can be seen as Im not sure how I posted em. Above is dinner, Caviar for starters, nice fillet steak followed by the 3 thingy dessert.

Below is seat and tv (sihowng flight number) and the 'spa'. Its a glorified shower room but nice to have proper loo than sit in a phone box and the shower is very nice. You just book with the stewardess what time you want it and you get min 20 mins depending on demand

Ahhhhhh in anticipation of your photos i thought i might see why Emirates staff would upgrade a non ' status' FF passenger into First class . Shame

no photo's of you at the most photographed part of the Emirates A380 (ie) The Bar.

With 76 Business seats and on average 50% of these seats taken by 'Gold/Silver' members it beggers belief that Emirates would upgrade a non

status passenger to First class. But hey its only an internet site so lets treat it for what it is 'just a 'fantasy'

Not sure why you are cynical of the guy.....

I often got the impression that upgrades were at the whim of the check-in staff and there might be many reasons for a person being upgraded.

One might be a snooty Gold Card holder insisting he/she didn't want the seat near the toilet, and the agent preferred to upgrade the person allocated a better seat in Biz to First rather than the awkward one. Or a requirement to position a group together in Biz and Joe tourist being sat in tthe middle.

I never get upgraded to First of late... possibly because my carriers don't fly First to/from Manchester. Used to happen to me all the time when I was a frequent BA traveller.

That may have been the case many years ago, but not nowadays (at least for the major carriers). You'll find that there are only a few senior staff authorised (as in being able to change the booking class in the CRS) at the "station". Even then, each upgrade has to be fully justified.

Not doubting the OP at all and best of luck to him, great way to travel.

I was 'Gold, Elite or Top Tier' or what ever you want you call it with Emirates for many years.

Their upgrading policy was to only upgrade punters if the class below was over booked, then they started with Gold members and fare paid (booking class) then worked down to Silver etc etc. So to get an upgrade with no status is lucky indeed.

Normally the flight dispatcher or office staff decided whom to upgrade as soon as they realised that the overbooking had come unstuck that day, nothing to do with the lounge dragons as they are affectionally known.

Am currently Gold with Qatar, and they run much the same process as far as I know, only had a few free upgrades from them in the last couple of years or so. Am actually still Silver with Emirates as well at the moment, although I don't use them anymore.

I am not in the industry, that is just my understanding of how things work, I stand to be corrected by people with real inside knowledge though.

Glad you enjoyed the flight.

Im not a regular poster, and never had a troll accusing me of lying on any internet forum. I must admit I am suprised by your comments, I didnt realise you were a prick. I didnt take photos of the bar area as I took the photos with my phone as my normal camera was in my case and I'm not one of these people who take loads of photos of strangers in bars or ask people to move out of the way so I can have my photo took , the pictures I took were where I wouldnt have to disturb anyone or look a pleb.

Maybe you thought that I ran into 1st class and ruffled a cushion took a photo and ran off, then maybe I bribed someone in 1st class to let me go at 3 different times to take a pic of what they were eating, then maybe later I bribed the same person to go into the spa and take photos of that, or it could be that the phots were took by the official Emirates photographer and I hacked their computer and downloaded the crappiest ones to put on here as they have never been seen on the web before.

Or maybe Im telling the truth, it may be too late for you to get a personality which then could help you to an upgrade and I am truly sorry there is nothing I can do about that, but maybe if you stop being a prick it may be a start

To be fair to the OP, I once got upgraded to first on Emirates and at that time I was only silver! just to add to the mystery I checked business during the flight and it wasn't full. The only explaination I could come up with was that I had reserved a seat somebody with more 'clout' wanted.

I went gold around 2002 and remained gold until '09 when I 'semi-retired'. I was also Gold on BA & Swiss and my favourite trick was to march up to the Emirates first class check-in (as one can even with a business ticket when a gold card holder) and 'mistakenly' produce my BA card. Out of an average of 5 long-hauls a year on Emirates I would get upgraded on at least one leg on over half of them despite never actualy asking. Compared with a similar number of flights on the other two, Emirates were far more generous with upgrades. I also found them very good at redeeming airmiles unlike BA!

A few points worth mentioning which I'm sure contributed to my success with Emirates:

1) Because I invariably had a 'carnet' to be stamped by customs, I was always one of the first to check-in.

2) I always dressed smartly, i.e. collar and tie and jacket simply because I was on a working trip and needed 'smart'.

3) I was always stone cold sober when checking-in . . . . . I left the drinking until later LOL
