A photo trip to Dachau Concentration Camp.

Recommended Posts

Recently visited Munich for a long weekend last week. Whilst it was quite hot (37.4oC), it was still pleasant enough to get out and about around the Munich area. So what to do? Decided on visiting Dachau and the camp for the morning. Its a very sombre and quiet place, and can be quite disturbing to some, but it shows the true horrors suffered by a race for no other reason than a certain person didn't like them.

Dachau is situated around 10 miles NW of Munich, and is very easy to reach by train, taking around 15 mins on the S-Bahn. Once at the station, its another short ride on a bus this time(723?) and drops you off right outside the vistors centre. Admission is free. Tours are organised every couple of hours if you need it, otherwise its quite a simple place to walk around by yourself.

WOW. I can't bear to look at the photos properly right now because I've been drinking.

I will have a proper look in the cold light of day when I'm sobre and can afford them the proper respect that they deserve.

Well done for this pictorial report Firth.

I visited this awful place myself many years ago, when living in Germany, and I think the Germans have done a marvellous thing to keep Dachau and other camps starkly accessible to visitors so that humankind never forgets the horrors perpetrated by a previous generation.

Waay more 'sanitised' than the Cambo 'Killing Fields' (stubbing your toe on a fumur protruding from the ground has a certain je ne sais quoi)

but poignant none the less

Brilliant pics Mr Firth. Many thanks. They have clearly gone to an awful lot of trouble("lest we forget") to keep the whole place in a "re-constructed" state. The "Arbeit Macht Frei" sign over the main entrance is always a grim reminder of the nature of these places and as far as I know the common slogan at the entrance point to the other German Concentration camps. Sometimes the large size of these places escapes the imagination but from the overhead view pic it's clear to see the huge scale of operations they had going. Interesting pic of the commandant's house, where presumably, he, his wife and family led a normal life right on the edge of horrific events that were taking place daily.Anyone who has seen the film or read the book "The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas" will be able to draw parallels with this.Cheers :thumbup

Thanks for posting the pics. I worked near Munich when I was much younger.............but never got around to visiting Dachau. We should never forget what happened, and I think its important we (and the future generations) never forget too.
