Honey Baked Hams

Recommended Posts

One of the things that I miss about home is access to really good cured hams. With the holidays just around the corner I have a hankering for a baked ham dinner... and maybe more importantly, those great ham sandwiches that come from the leftovers.

You would think that in a country where just about every meal is made with either chicken or pork that it would be easier to locate a ham store... errr

So here is my question: Can anyone suggest a place in or around Pattaya that would offer cooked or fresh cured hams? And if not then could anyone point me in the direction of something called "pink salt" which I understand that I would need to cure my own.

Honey Baked Hams. My favorite place to buy a spiral cut ham or a very nice ham based lunch.

I too miss good ham. When I am in Jomtien, I always stop by Rich Man Poor Man on Soi 9. His ham steak dinner is great. He makes a mustard horse radish sauce the really compliments the already good ham. I asked Eddie and he did tell me where he bought the ham but I have forgotten where he said. You get a generous thick slice of ham.

Isn't there a grocery store in Pattaya and Bangkok that sells a lot of Western Food? Right now, I can't think of the name, but I think one of the branches in Pattaya is on one of the lower levels of Central Festival. Maybe they would have something.

I looked up what I was trying to think of. Villa Market? Also, there are some wholesale meat places in Pattaya that supposedly have ham.

Hell, I'd buy one and send it to you, but the Thai immigration people would probably go nuts, and the cost of shipping would probably be outrageous.

How about a caned ham? Some of those can be OK in an emergency?

Sounds like Villa.

The Jomtien Pig and Whistle serves a quite good ham steak so the general concept is known. For some bizarre reason, it's on the menu as gammon steak. :P

Technically, there's a difference between ham and gammon. It has to do with the way in which they are cured. Gammon usually doesn't have as strong a flavor as ham. I have no idea whether restaurants in Pattaya actually serve gammon or ham, but the term "gammon" is used in the U.K.

Gammon steak is the way we describe a thick cut of ham in the UK......!

I have had genuine carved off the bone ham sandwiches from Palmers bar. Obviously they will not be selling it wholesale, but they may be able to tell you where to get it from.

U.S. bar owners in Pattaya who have a background in professional cooking/restaurants (like Coop at Chik-n-Coop or Skeeter at Sky Bar) may be able to give you some tips on where to get American-style honey cured ham in Pattaya. The ham I had last Christmas Eve at the Sky Bar was equal to anything I've ever had in the U.S.
