Is there some Internet Problem out there

Recommended Posts

I am up late this AM.

I cannot get into my Yahoo Home Page or Yahoo Mail.

It times out.

I also get a pop up telling me My Flash Player Needs to Be Updated.

When I tried this my Virus protection jumped in and says it has quarantined a Trojan.

None of my "enquiries'" on the internet have come up with anything.

Even when I came here I get a pop up saying 'Flash Player Needs Updating.'

It mentioned Facebook too.(Don't use it)

Happening on 2 different laptops....with different Windows OS.

Firefox and IE

Both currently doing a full scan....virus stuff is McAfee.

Help.....

Sounds like a virus. You didn't mention your ISP. I have 3BB and it seems fine.

Well a full scan revealed nothing although the Flash Player update may have been a trojan/phish.

Not sure how a Virus gets onto 2 machines! Don't use this one very much.

My Yahoo Home page seems accessible now, but no Email Login.

Still getting Flashplayer warning pop-ups.

I am with TOT.

My yahoo uses https.

Thanks.....

But can it be resident in the router?

I have changed that and seems things are working better.

Hmm maybe.... this is at the bottom of your link!

The problem is not with your computer. The infection is on the modem side. Just rest your modem. I tried everything even formatting my computer but I still had the same problem in Firefox, IE and Chrome- Then I reset my modem and it cured it

You changed routers and it's working?

That's a head scratcher for sure...I've not heard of a router borne virus.

Yeah... see the edit I did above.

This is outside my knowledge somewhat.....I just fell back on my past experience of swapping things out.

I may reset the router to Factory Condition and reload it... otherwise I have to reconfigure my Wireless printer to the new network.

(This is the second incident I have had with my Billion router, TOT supplied, recently, I wonder if using my Smart Phone on the network is behind this?)

Good luck..hope that works, because the recommendation for removing the "virus" it looks like an afternoon of hair-pulling.

Yeah, I appreciate the input, but I am glad I read through to the end first!

I think the source of the pop up and communication interruption was the router, and McAfee jumped on the Flash Player Phishing download.

Obsession... I just paid a fortune to update my subscription....BIG TIP>>> Do not let McAfee automatically renew your subscription, it is $80+, when you buy new it is 1/3 of that! I may load one of the programs on MM's link as a secondary level of protection.

One learns each day...but I do not need technical challenges today after last night.

I see Silver Star 3 on WS is now a 100% coyote club under a new name!

Norton does that 3x the price for automatic renewals BS also. I let mine expire and a week later they were still reminding me to renew, so I just went to their website and entered a new subscription and the charge was about 1/3 of the automatic rate for the same software. Slimy bastards.

I had issues with Yahoo Mail a couple of years ago, when someone managed to get hold of my password and then used my account to have fun and play games with me. Sometimes I could access my mail, at other times I couldn’t. When I received an email from an unknown person to my Yahoo Mail, using my username, I knew there was a serious problem. There was not a lot of harm done. It was probably some smart kid, fucking around with me. Nevertheless, it was difficult to get Yahoo to help me to get the problem sorted out, as they only sent me automated messages, asking me security questions, which were not the same I had supplied to them in the first place. It took me a couple of weeks to eventually get my account back, changing to a stronger PW, which now gets changed more often.

I also was asked to download the latest Flash Player and had no problems with it.

I am also with TOT using a fixed line, which has worked well for me for many years, getting similar download and upload speeds as MM. I think one has to be lucky. Some of the TOT users at the other end of the building have and are still having problems, getting a decent connection and it seems to make no difference, whether they are using TOT or other servers. As I have a fixed line with TOT, they also allow me to use free WiFi on the iPAD, when I am connected to the Internet. I have lost Interest in the iPad. My TGF is using it when I am doing something else using the lap top computer.

I have used Firefox for many years now and just recently upgraded to their latest version. I never had problems with Firefox, except when their second-last version would not allow me to use Skype. Skype now works better than ever. IE had big problems lately with security issues, which they now claim have been fixed. I had problems with IE years ago and still won’t use that browser.

Hi Gonzo.

I have a single TOT line/router in my place, i don't know how yours is utilised, perhaps split around the condos?

The standard password for the router is known to many and I believe TOT collect data and can perform remote administration on the router (ie from their office). After 2 incidents I have changed the password....... I too felt I was being targetted.

Your email problem sounds like one I had over 2 years ago, where someone seemed to be able to use mine to send out spam to all my contacts.

That spam, it had a link which when clicked on , did the same all over again.... I thought it was an exploitation of a browser weakness where an open email session could be exploited and mimicked. The browser people would never admit to such a failing.

I am unsure how you can associate a Skype issue with Firefox as it works independent of your browser.

Hi Jacko,

I have always had my own single/ router bought from TOT, which is not split around with other users and also have my own password. When I had a problem with my TOT connection running at a slower speed in 2011, I just grabbed my Acer laptop and the router and went to the TOT office at the corner of Pattaya Klang and Third Road. Their able technician always fixed any problem. Ringing their office and asking them to send someone to help can take a long time.

When I bought my condo it had a fixed line. As far as I know I am the only person on my floor with a fixed line. All the other computer users on my floor are using WiFi connections at about THB 400 per month or 30 THB per day from the condo office with often poor results.

I have been paying THB 738.30 per month now for a 10 Mbps connection for quite some time now, with a free WiFi connection for the iPad, which only works when my computer connection is on.

I just received my last statement from them, offering 13 Mbps for THB. 690. I will go there and check it out. I also go to their office every year or so and pay THB 10000 in advance, which covers all of my bills with them for a year. I also bought a home phone from them with a 038 number, which is handy as a back-up and works well.

I never had many problems with pop-ups either, when I accidentally allowed pop-ups on my Bundesliga website. It took me a while to find out how to disable pop-ups. I am not a computer geek and don’t like to spend time on learning new software. I like Windows 7 now, but will not buy another computer with Windows 8 on it. I spent nearly all day yesterday at a friend’s place, trying to fix things he stuffed up on his new and first computer with Windows 8 on it. It was a pain in the arse to suss out all the changes Microsoft made from Windows 7.

I like Norton’s safe search function, which seems to work reasonably well. I also use NO Script, which blocks Java Scipt and Java. I use a toggle switch to enable Java Scipt to allow me to open sites I trust, which seems easy enough.

Jacko, there was a Firefox version some time ago, which was not compatible with Skype. It was well known at the time and has been addressed by Firefox in their next version. It was no big deal. Firefox is all right and works for me without any problems.

Call me old-fashioned, which I probably am, but I still like to correspond with friends and family using email or use the phone. I tried Facebook and Twitter and don't like either. I learned my lesson after the problems with Yahoo Mail debacle and now use 4 different accounts. I use one account for important stuff, like legal issues and Internet banking, another account to correspond with friends and family the other two accounts for less important stuff. I change passwords more often for the more important things. The problem at times can be to remember them all, as one gets older. I will be all right for a long time to come, as long as I stay away from the beer.

I got a good deal on Norton 360. It was $49.95 for a two year subscription. I'm quite happy with it. One thing I liked was that they give you the option to cancel the automatic renewal. Of course I did cancel the renewal option. My US bank offered a free year of McAfee. I signed up for it and found that there were conditions. I had a hard time deleting the program but I finally got rid of all their junk. I will NEVER use McAfee.

Thanks for reminding me to cancel the Automatic Renewal Option, which I have used for quite some time. Last year they deducted AUD 129.99 from my debit card. When I went back to Australia I could have bought exactly the same product for less than half that in most computer shops. I just logged into my Norton account to see if I still had the latest Norton 360 Premium Edition on my computer. No problems with that and the same product can be bought for preferred customers for THB 2090 if you decide to buy it now. I guess everybody with a Norton account is a preferred customer, but when it comes to renewing the subscription they seem to charge twice as much. My subscription does not expire for another 3 months and by then I will be back in Australia for my yearly 3-months visit there and will buy a product from one of the many computer outlets there at the right price.
