Is this the final nail in the coffin for Malaysian Airlines?

Recommended Posts

Seems the same thing applied to the A380 flight to LHR, but after some "discussions", checked-in baggage is now allowed onto this flight. Tough shit if you are flying into Paris or Amsterdam though!!......................................

[uPDATE] In the interest of safety, Malaysia Airlines currently operates a long route to Europe via Egypt airspace, which combined with temporary unseasonably strong head winds, is limiting the airlines' ability to carry baggage in cargo.

This longer flight path consumes more jet fuel and for safety reasons, Malaysia Airlines has had to impose temporary limitation on checked in baggage allowance. From tonight, 5 January 2016 (until further notice), the airline will only be able to accommodate cabin baggage of up to 7kg – one piece totalling 7kg per Economy Class passengers and two pieces totalling 14kg (up to 7kg per piece) for Business/First Class passengers. Passengers who wish to check in their luggage will be able to do so, however their baggage will only arrive later.

Malaysia Airlines regrets the inconvenience caused to passengers and will deliver stranded baggage as soon as the situation permits. Guests are welcome to contact 1300-88-3000 or +603 7843 3000 (outside of Malaysia) for enquiries on the status of their checked in baggage.

Connecting passengers travelling on oneworld member carriers with through check in may also have their baggage offloaded due to this operational constraints.

Malaysia Airlines will continue to assess the changing situation over the region and will update passengers when operations are back to normal. Safety remains the centre of the airline’s operations.

[uPDATE] Please be informed that normal baggage allowance on Malaysia Airlines’ flights to London, operated by the A380 aircraft, has been restored with immediate effect.

Baggage limitations however, still apply for flights to Amsterdam and Paris on 5-6 January 2016.

Weird one Firth! I was led to believe that almost all of these passenger configured aircraft come nowhere near their maximum payload even when fully loaded.

Considering the Airline and its recent mishaps affecting sales, could be that a reluctance to pay for a bit more fuel is the driving factor here? :clueless

Good spot Firth, might be worth checking out Pprune for more info.

It mentioned Cabin baggage but not hold baggage ( or I'm a bit thick and missed it :) ). I'd be interested to see their routing, I think the headwinds line is BS, multiple carriers fly on routes via Egyptian Airspace and have not mentioned this.

Where are the flights from?, the ones Ex KL don't route over Egyptian airspace at all. there is a lot of speculation that the problems they had last couple of years were more than just unlucky coincidence, and it's understandable that they're shitting themselves.

Interesting play down of perhaps a more serious issue.

**Edit** I read it wrong, passengers were not allowed ANY hold baggage, only check in baggage of 7 kg. I'd argue a breach of contract on that one.

**Edit** It's on KL to Europe routes and Industry experts are incredulous. It seems to be a cop out and BS on their part toavert mentioning the "T" word. Cunts, I hope they go bust,.

It is a coincidence that I was considering using Malaysian Airlines in the spring, but only for the short hop down to KUL.

I was looking at BA flights, but the outward from BKK timings do not suit me, arriving 'up North' UK late in the day. It appears that for no extra cost, I can board a flight to KUL on Malaysian and pick up BA to London from there. Hong Kong also appeared to be an option, but increases travel time a few hours more.

The "unexpected" headwinds line would appear to be utter bullshit to me also Butch. Upper Air Flows are basically from behind (tailwinds) when flying from Europe to the Far East, and they often try to "hitch a ride" on the jetstreams, which always flow Easterly (One of the main reasons for routeing over Ukraine previously). Different outward and Inward schedule times reflect that. Climate change is shifting the jetstream about a lot more, but at the moment it is in the normal position and routeing over Egypt is clear of it. The stream is set to move South in the next few days however, but that is not the dates in question.

My one and only experience with Malaysian was pretty horrific, I almost croaked it on the flight and my claim to posthumous fame might have been I was the first person to snuff it on their brand new A380, as it had only been flying a week. However, as you can probably surmise, I survived the flight and vowed never to fly on them again, so the only 2 airlines on my "don't fly unless escaping a war zone" list are South African and Malaysian.

I've been reading some speculative reports that they're in trouble, but are they not govt owned anyway?.

Unlike Butch I have no issues at all with the airline. It did everything right. I would use them but the flight times are not suitable but more importantly there are few bargain flights and when I have tried to get them they disappear from the Internet in a flash. As for the baggage issue. This would have been hell for me. When I arrive home I am lugging my flight bag, laptop and duty free.
