Earthquake in Myanmar - affects in Thailand

Recommended Posts

latest report here, 1 building collapsed, 8 people rescued, 1 died and 43 still missing.

Hopefully most of those 43 will survive but after the earthquakes here I am not overly optimistic

Video of the building collapse.

Yes mate! My daughter called from her work in Bangkok this afternoon shaken from the aftershocks.. I'm worried about her riding home tonight after work because there is gonna be a lot of unsafe masonry/debris from buildings, overhead bridges and BTS etc etc ..

Nothing felt in Pattaya by myself. Bringing down The Waterfront might have been beneficial.

I see the building in Bangkok fell vertically, pretty much into it's own footprint.... I hope that fact does not get the 9-11 conspiracy theorists going!

Airports were closed in Thailand....as was BTS etc. Relatives of my Mrs all on motorcycles to get home, and minibuses.

Heaven knows what the situation is in Myanmar..... I will be putting the news on shortly.

Yep, I was thinking about that last night.. During my 18 months working there I saw roadworks being cut into mountains in the Southeastern Provinces that would collapse if anyone sneezed, The Rakhine mountains were too dangerous to drive across in the rain, Bago was very susceptible to landslides and the houses out in the countryside were less safe than a cowshed in Isaan (In fact many families lived directly above the cows). Normal townhouses in Yangon were so old they probably just imploded in a pile of dust! However, I don't expect any meaningful news to come out other than the major towns and cities though...

A minor encumbrance for me is that Wise announced that my latest transfer will be delayed "Due to the earthquake in Bangkok" ...

I had an appointment at Bangkok Pattaya Hospital yesterday afternoon, knew nothing about any earthquake and was amazed to find Building B completely devoid of staff or patients, and lots of nurses etc. evacuating patients from the main building. Nothing for it but to go home, where the TV told me why.
One has to ask how come one high-rise under construction in Bangkok collapsed owing to an earthquake with an epicenter 600 miles away, while other buildings were just damaged. Pity the poor buggers who were working in it, there can scarcely be any hope for them.

Pity the bloke in the crane!! The cab separated half way during the fall, Maybe something cushioned the blow ... or hopefully there was nobody operating it at the time !!

There was a video posted elsewhere that showed the guy getting ejected from the cab shortly after the crane tore away from the building. RIP to the guy.

Out 47 still missing, latest is there is signs of life of at least 15. I hope they get to those trapped in time.

Signs of life detected at collapsed Bangkok building

Vital signs of 15 people trapped in the collapsed under-construction State Audit Office building in Bangkok's Chatuchak district were detected on Saturday, raising hopes for rescuers to save them within 72 hours.

The death toll from the building collapse stands at eight, while 47 people remain missing and their identities unconfirmed, Suriyan Rawiwan, director of the Bangkok Fire and Rescue Department, said on Saturday.

Rescuers have detected vital signs for 15 people trapped in the high-rise building, according to Mr Suriyan. Heavy machinery has been deployed to clear rubble and navigate rescue teams to the victims.

"Rescue time is set at 72 hours, as fasting and dehydration are possible. Victims risk shock and death if rescue takes longer," he said. The department aims to conduct the rescue operation within 48 hours. Vital signs were detected for trapped individuals who were in groups of three to seven under the debris.

we had 2 massive earthquakes in 2010 and 2011. The first killed 2 people. The second killed 135 in the single multistory building that collapsed.  The other 50 were killed in about 40 different places, mostly by masonry falling off buildings that otherwise  remained intact. People were killed when they fled out of the building and debris fell on them, the people that stayed inside survived.

Another article about the building and companies behind the construction. From the article, "He reported that the structure was about 30% complete and had resumed construction after delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic."

Under-construction audit office in Bangkok collapses after Myanmar earthquake

And a reddit topic about the same...

I think we are all aware that the tremors ripple out in concentric circles but surely over a long distance some tremors are dampened by geology and/or terrain more than others.

Gordon Tickle said that he felt nothing in Chiang Rai and went on to suggest it was due to the range of mountains in between.

I don't know if that is true or not because I haven't a clue on the subject.

I remember reading somewhere that tremors from quakes are directional in nature. Google AI confirmed my memory.
