Help.

Sometimes when clicking on forums or threads this message accompanied by a hooter sound comes up.

"This page provides potentially unsafe information to an ActiveX control. Your current security settings prohibit running controls in this manner. As a result, this page may not display correctly".

It's very inconsistent.

Can take 2 or 3 attempts to open a thread or forum subject.

It also happens on the OFBboard.

My local computer expert was unable to help me.

Thanks for any advise.

cheers

chico.

ok, that is pretty sure (85%) a problem with the following dll: comcat.dll

now it depends on what version of windows you run and if you have any version of ms office installed and if so, which version.

let me know and i will tell you how to fix it (as i said, with 85% guarantee)

but before starting to mess around with dll's - try the following, much easier, thing. but do this only if the sites from where you get this error are sites you trust.

that works only if you have any version of the internet explorer

1) click tools

2) choose "internet options", you will get something like this:

ieoptions.jpg

3) choose the security tab and click on "trusted sites" , then click on the "sites" button below.

trusted.jpg

4) fill in the site that you want to add (example http://www.pattayatalk.com)

5) click add

add.jpg

6) click ok -> then better reboot the system once and see if it has solved the problem...

hope it works

Hi Cybers.

Thank you for your help.

BTW, had to put in “https” etc.

I then downloaded about a dozen threads no problem, then the “ActiveX” blast is back.

Even when trying to preview this post it came up. Had to hit back button twice to get rid of it and so lost the post.

Doing this on Word so I don’t lose it again.

I’m running “Windows 98” and ms office installed is “Office97”.

Please bear with me as I'm very computer illiterate.

Appreciate your assistance.

Chico.

ps, even trying to post this, the f'n thing blasts. SHTT

ok, it is probably really either a damaged or wrong version of the comcat.dll, the best way to resolve this problem would basically be the following: but i know that reinstalling internet explorer can cause an seasoned it exprt headache, so first i would try the following..right click this link and say "save target as" -> save the dll to your desktop.

COMCAT.DLL

open your windows explorer and go to the C:\WINDOWS\system32 directory.

locate the file comcat.dll, copy it to a save location (not to your desktop though as there is the new dll)

then use the following command:

click start -> run ->

type the following line:

regsvr32 /u C:\WINDOWS\system32\comcat.dll

(where WINDOWS can be a different directory for Win98, can't really remember)

go and delete the old dll from the system32 and move the new one from the desktop to the system32 directory

now click start -> run ->

type the following line:

regsvr32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\comcat.dll (again you have to check if for win98 the system32 directory is in the same location and change the command accordingly)

after that (if you have not recieved an error), reboot the system and hope for the best :-)

used to work for me on an NT Machine a couple if years back, but can not guarantee the success on win98...

good luck anyway and if u need further helo, you can also mail me at work cause that may be faster

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the Comcat.dll file is damaged or is the wrong version number.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, unregister the Comcat.dll file by using the Regsvr32.exe utility with the /u switch as in the following example:

regsvr32 /u C:\winnt\system32\comcat.dll

and rename the Comcat.dll file in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder.

After you unregister the Comcat.dll file, reinstall Internet Explorer.

For information about how to rename a file, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type renaming, and then double-click the "Renaming files" topic.

If you remove Internet Explorer before you reinstall it, be sure to rename the Comcat.dll file after removing Internet Explorer.

The information in this article applies to:

I've been getting exactly the same message for a few weeks now. Symptoms identical to those described.

Looks like the problem isn't at our end at all. :D

it sure is a problem on you end if you get the same message. it can be caused by an windows upgrade or any software installation that touches the comcat.dll - try one of the above, the comcat.dll fix worked for me in my old company to fix a couple of NT and W2K machines...

the first fix is not a fix really but a workaround, but worth trying though.

Running XP Professional.

Happens to me as well, only on Pattaya Talk....

Scary thing is, it is intermittant.....Can go for a few days without it happening.

When I get the message, just click OK, then BACK and try again...Always works the second time.

I'm using 98SE and IE6. Haven't had a problem for a few days now.

Same story though. Intermittent and only on Pattaya Talk. If it was our gear at fault, wouldn't it happen when we went onto other sites? :beer

I have exactly same config. as monkeyman.

Also running Norton Internet Security 2003 Pro Edition. Maybe it's a setting in the firewall....But intermittant, that confuses me.

well, when windows is involved, it is not always that simple and logical :gulp that's why i suggested to try it with another browser.

it also makes a difference if you have SP2 for Internet Explorer Installed or not. you can get that info by clicking help and then "About Internet Explorer"

and it would be interesting what sort of activex controls are being used on the site, that can only be answered by pete though.

as to norton, i don't think it is a problem with internet security, NIS is usually not causing problems even though the 2004 version still has some bugs.

As far as I'm aware there are no active x controls on this site. I have no idea what is causing this problem but like cybers1b, I doubt its the site causing it.

I've just started using Firefox instead of Internet Explorer and I must say I like it a lot. More screen space, works faster , seems to use the cache better, easy install and picks up all your IE bookmarks and settings and completely free.

Why don't you guys give it a go. you can download it here -

Firefox Web Browser

It's more secure than IE too!

I am not surprised that there are no ActiveX controls at all 1luv After all, as long as Microsoft is involved, you can always expect some surprises. I agree, Firefox is a good one, and it really is fater as the Memory Management in it's code is better then that of IE. Also Opera is a nice one.

But if you wanna be 100% better off - Linux is the answer :beer

Unfortunatly our Company is M$ Fan when it comes to Desktops so I have to use it, but well, at leasy at home i don't.

I had the same intermittant problems with ActiveX as described above not only on this board but also with the thaivisa.com board (which uses Innervision) and also with yahoo mail. Last week I had to reinstall XP Pro and instead of using IE I downloaded Firefox and have had no problems with ActiveX since. And I do like Firefox.

ActiveX is a M$ technology that is not supported by Firefox, Netscape, Opera...there are plugins to download for these Browesers, but who would want to do that, after all, it is a good thing that it does not work in these Browsers as it makes them safer. I think the activex plug in for netscape is called ScriptActive ors omething like that.
