I've started reading Coming Up For Air by George Orwell. It's the only novel he wrote that I haven't read. I'm only a few chapters in but I'm enjoying it.

I love this. Someone I knew chose to have this played at their funeral too.

"Borrowing" the 800,000 for a retirement visa.
Siam Sam replied to rmicheald's topic in Expat Issues
You quote my answer to your question and then ask me same the question again? I give up! Whether I referenced that thread or not, it wasn't for any reason that involved tko as we had an argument about something unrelated to the subject of that thread and it also didn't concern Simply Sam, there was no need for him to get involved, which he did because I'd wound him up about it although he's trying to do his best to say that I am the one that's been upset. MM, I'm not going to waste any more time on this, if you reply then you won't get an answer from me, this is beyond childish. -

Oh my god. This is absolutely priceless. You're resurrecting finished arguments from the past in threads that people have stopped posting in that also have absolutely nothing to do with you and you're the one that's telling me that my feelings have been hurt? It's plain to see that somewhere along the line I've struck a nerve with you, hence your need to behave in that way. I couldn't care less what he has to say about British people and whether they are insular or not, let's face it, he didn't do a very good job of proving that that statement has any credence to it, all he did was identify the etymology of the word "insular" which didn't support what he had to say at all so I treated it with the disdain that it deserved. Are "chip" shots the same as "cheap" shots or is this some American term that us Brits aren't familiar with? The way I see it, nobody lost or won that debate. That's just your opinion. tko and I had a difference of opinion and that's never going to change. No point in going round in circles arguing with someone who doesn't see things the same way. You're also confused. tko and I had an argument about Americans and passport ownership so how can comments I'm making about retired people living in Pattaya and their incomes be aimed at him "indirectly?" Stop jumping to conclusions that you can't substantiate and just making things up. It makes you sound like a fool. Didn't I ask you the same thing first? Answering my question with the same question speaks volumes about you. What was it that I said that hit a nerve? In actual fact, don't bother explaining. It doesn't take much intelligence to work out what it was and why it was. I can't be bothered to reply to your moronic posts that you've started because you've allowed me to wind you up. I will not reply to any more of your posts either. If you see me in Pattaya, approach me and I'll buy you a drink. We can have a laugh about this exchange of posts and find out what each other are really like, rather than our misleading Internet personas Until then.......... -

Not my imagination at all, there were several posts from people in that thread that made it seem that monthly incomes of six figures were normal, including tko himself. My opinion is different to tko's about that and about Americans and passport ownership but that debate has now finished, hence the reason why I stopped responding because I saw no point in continuing it although it seems your're determined to continue it over here even though it doesn't involve you. What motivates you to do that exactly? -
I finally finished the epic Don Quixote. It took me a long time to read because I didn't enjoy it and I struggled to get into it, particularly with the last two hundred pages because I'd completely lost interest by then. It has to be the most superfluous novel I have ever read, there are so many chapters where nothing of any interest happens at all and it's so boring and tedious to read. My copy is 760 pages but I think it could have been written in half as many pages. There are some interesting stories in the novel but they are few and far between and not enough to make this book enjoyable. If you're thinking of reading this I wouldn't bother, I only read it because it's considered a classic and I want to be able to say I have read it. It's actually considered to be one of the best novels ever written and a canonical novel but surely that's only because it was written in the seventeenth century? The next time I read a novel from that era I will think twice because I find them hard reading! Five out of ten.

Totally agree with you and this was why I made the comments I did in the "retiring or staying long tern in Pattaya" thread in the Members' Bar part of the forum. You can be anyone you want on the Internet, and as with most people I have met in Pattaya (and the reason I am often reluctant to meet new people there) they are usually full of shit and try to make out they are something that they aren't. If you were to believe the consensus of that thread then the majority of people that have retired to Pattaya are living off of six figure incomes each month in a lap of luxury but most will know that that isn't the case and there is very little evidence of that being the case. In my experience those people are a minority and nowhere near the majority. -

Read the posts I made in the recent thread about retiring or staying long term in Pattaya. Maybe then you'll detect the sarcasm in my post. -

I thought all the retired people that live in Pattaya are on six figure incomes each month? -
The brilliant: Mystic River for which Penn fully deserved his Best Actor Oscar, his acting in this was absolutely amazing.

That film looks good. It also stars: Kevin Bacon

How important cold that Mata goal last night turn out to be? Three points desperately needed to level with City in fourth place although they have a game in hand. Ten games to go, gate crashing the top four is now a possibility again. Wins against West Brom and City this month and it's highly likely.........come on United!

And I agree with you too. The people pulling the strings at the big clubs want success to come quickly and there is no patience. It will be sad to see the youngsters overlooked for other signings but if they bring success I can't argue with that although I would rather there was a nucleus of home grown English players at United. If they move on and become great players elsewhere than that would be hard to accept even if we are successful. It could come back to haunt us.

As I did with the Liverpool game last month, I actually think United are going to win today. It's been that sort of season - when you're least expecting them to get a result they get one. I've also decided to ease up on my criticism of Van Gaal. To be fair to him, even if the football isn't always attractive we are still in with a chance of winning two competitions and could still gate crash the top four if we win well today. If they beat the dippers in the next round of the Europa League then that will do wonders for the fans and their feelings towards Van Gaal and considering he has a 100% record against them, I can see that happening. I don't think I would be able to say this season hasn't been a success if we win one of the cup competitions we are still involved in although another season without Champions League football would be a disaster. But if they win a cup and manage to scrape top four then I think it would be rather harsh to still be calling for his head. I am an advocate of Mourinho but if it is true what people say about him and the chances he would give to the youth then I don't think this is the future for MUFC, we have a lot of promising youngsters coming through right now and this club has and always will be about nurturing the youth to become the stars of the future. In the likes of Jesse Lingard, James Wilson, Paddy McNair, Donald Love, Marcus Rashford, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson etc we have a lot of future stars all starting to make the first team and in my opinion they are the future and the best chance we have of building a side capable of challenging for the Premiership and Champions League again. Focus on the youth, even if that means we will still have to wait another three or four seasons for it all to come to fruition. As much as I admire Mourinho, I don't think he is as worried about the youth as much as the board and fans at United are and he'll want an open cheque book to put things right which isn't always the answer - City and Chelsea are doing their best to prove that at the moment.
