Yes. And I asked you where you saw it. Any other pointers? Because I can't find "moving suvarnabhumi higher" or anything similar at the Bangkok Post, which I read, but certainly can miss stories or forget them. I'd like to see the story, I'm interested. I don't doubt you saw it. Is there a reason I can't see it also? No? Good. Thanks. As I wrote: Any pointers welcome. I'm responsible for what I write, you're responsible for what you write, etc. *I* wrote about diverting flights, etc. You didn't. I didn't say you did. I quoted your post and everything. You made that up. I said/wrote no such thing. You could quote what I wrote, the way I quoted you. Why don't you? Not as sensational? .

You can join Truelife, free, use a throwaway email, etc. After you join, you can see a lot of live, streaming TV, many stations 24 hours a day, right from the floods. Right now I recommend TNN, but several other stations aren't too bad. Start here at Truelife.com. .

No significant floods in the Northeast any more, it's all run downhill to the central region. .

Yes. I blame it on Pattaya. You are right about westernisation and other homogenising, but even in Bangkok raising a smile is not at all difficult. Pattaya is not the land of smiles, Thailand is. .

I don't dismiss anyone but at the same time, this isn't the place to be getting tax advice, generally speaking. Here's the problem: You CAN get good advice, just as you say. And you CAN get rotten advice. And if you have come here LOOKING for advice, you have absolutely no way to tell the difference. .

Bummer. There's going to be a lot of that. A lot of the banks and finance companies have already announced relief, though. Never saw such talk. Any references? My balls aren't made of crystal but everyone I've seen/heard seems as certain as you can be at the mo the Bangkok airport (Suvarnabhumi) is going to be fine. (Don Mueang, on the other hand, may not be.) "Higher" military airports means Isan - Korat for prime example. You can't, you just CAN'T divert Suvarnabhumi traffic there, so if Suvarnabhumi is closed, there won't be alternatives on higher ground, Thailand air traffic will simply be 90 per cent closed. Airlines, apart from THAI, are not going to park at Korat and wait out the floods. And they CANNOT move passengers into Korat, Takhli, Udorn, etc. In a horrible, terrible emergency, they could very slowly move passengers OUT of those places. Maybe. The next week is going to be just horrible for Bangkok and especially surrounding provinces. As they say in the US, the rubber is hitting the road for the Big Mango right now. High tide going up, runoff coming down, they meet right at Bangkok. Happens every year and of course this year is very, very bad. .

Burqa's in Walking Street
joekicker replied to Grahamxxx's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
Well, I think Thailand would be a better example, where there are many more than two branches of Islam. For example. In recent years, the Shiites in the Min Buri area of Bangkok have decided the women should cover up in a way that delights the religious police of Iran -- and they do it BECAUSE of Iran. It's just an example of what you're on about, but quite visible. EXACTLY what I was thinking. Weirded me out when I saw it. On the other hand, it *is* an actual event, and the sort of thing people use to show gross hypocrisy by followers of a major religion. And they're not wrong, but to me the point is that PEOPLE are hypocrites, without reference to their professed religion, and it's not hard to find examples. But I have (often) wondered why Muslims are figuratively whipped here so often about their hypocrisy while peaceful, loving, tolerant Buddhists are not. . -
US tax law is that you pay tax on any income. There are certain rules about it, which no one from Norway or England or Slobbovia or (probably) the USA can help you with in YOUR situation, but generally if it is income it is taxed by the US IRS. You MUST file a return. And in general if you collect, cash and spend a pension you must pay income tax on it, yes -- or to be more exact, it is taxable income, yes. The US is NOT NOT like most other countries, where if you are out of the country you have no income tax obligation. However. If you are out of the US for 11 months of the year and are "resident" (US definition, not Thai), you get a large "free", non-taxable income of something over $80,000 (it changes each year) that you can take off the bottom line. In addition, the US and Thailand have a tax treaty - if you pay income tax in one, you don't have to pay it in the other, although if you live in Thailand AND receive income you MUST file a Thai return to even start to qualify for the benefits of that. If you are asking the barroom lawyers on this forum about US taxes, you need a bit of help from the US. If you act on the various advice you get here from Yuropeens and other people, you WILL screw up. .

You mean the Thai girls killed by fire because they were chained to the beds in Phuket? . -
VERY reasonable compared with what the Indian money-lenders charge, yep. No, and especially since Thaksin, there's no stringent criteria. It's really up to the banks. Farmers are much more likely to get some money than city folks. .
-
Yes you can use homes and land and get huge loans. It's not quite a walk-in operation, and it's quite useful to know someone in the bank. Several banks went totally bankrupt on such loans, doing what you suspect banks could do with an operation like that. .

Just out of idle (really) curiosity, why don't you notice the hypocritical Buddhists? There are about... what?.... 300 times as many of them? I can't remember a single post in a single thread in this forum that even mentioned it. . -

Fits exactly except that it's not in Pattaya, she's never been to Walking Street and Iranians don't generally wear burqas. Other than that, though... . -

Is there some reference to a violent woman in a "burqa" on Walking Street. Can you provide that link, I definitely missed it. . -

How do you know this? I've certainly not met every Muslim woman, but I've never met one who was not allowed to drive or speak. I know they exist, but how do you know about this one? . -
Actually, that's what the rice is for. .

My son loves this show, and he was in absolute stitches at the katoey stuff. His US girl friend didn't get most of it. Got it for them via torrent, UKNova has had it more than a week. .

The other thing is that Pattaya itself and certainly attractions like the golf courses drain pretty well, and it's really HUGELY unusual to be flooded out of anything for more than a day. You shouldn't miss many tee times in November, if any at all. This is the climax of the rainy season right about now. Enjoy. .
-
The only flooding in and around Pattaya will be because of heavy rain. It's not rivers overflowing like Bangkok and so on. There is no way to predict when, if or how much flooding there will be in and right around Pattaya, it depends on the weather and rain gods of the day. .

Burqa's in Walking Street
joekicker replied to Grahamxxx's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
Good one. I have a number of such pictures and photos myself. It wasn't very long ago. I simply don't understand the huge obsession with how societies dress. And to me, the idea that "they" are "wrong" is... well, yes, stupid. What is wrong is FORCING people to wear such-and-such, and controlling them. There's surely enough of that going on everywhere to engage more interest than what some woman tourist in Pattaya is wearing. . -
This comparison isn't over the years, though, it's today. .
