  1. This is just too funny to pass up! Best of all its true: The link is no longer valid, so here's the article ************* French government bans use of word 'email' The French government has banned the use of the word 'email' in all its ministries, documents, publications and websites. In the latest step to stem an incursion of English words into the French language, the Culture Ministry says the term should be replaced with 'courriel'. The ministry's General Commission on Terminology and Neology insists internet surfers in France already use the phrase courrier electronique (electronic mail) instead of email. The commission ruled: "Evocative, with a very French sound, the word courriel is broadly used in the press and competes advantageously with the borrowed mail in English." The commission has links to the Academie Francaise, the prestigious institution that has been one of the top opponents of allowing English terms to seep into French. Some internet industry experts say the decision is artificial and doesn't reflect reality. Marie-Christine Levet, president of French internet service provider Club Internet, said: "The word courriel is not at all actively used. Email has sunk in to our values." She said Club Internet wasn't changing the words it uses, adding: "Protecting the language is normal, but email's so assimilated now that no one thinks of it as American. Courriel would just be a new word to launch." © Associated Press Story filed: 15:54 Friday 18th July 2003
  2. Okay, I understand having some trepidation regarding an unknown hotel. Suffice it to say that Sabai Lodge is a good choice. All things considered: comfort, quiet, location (i.e., entertainment, shopping, transportation to other places of interest), value, internet, tailors, etc. Yes, there are other good places to stay but you have to start somewhere. Rather than confuse the issue why not pick this place? Honest, no one's trying to set you up with a lady boy. Once you're here, you can easily check out other hotels.
  3. Using priceline.com, I got r/t from San Francisco to BKK for $482.60, 5/27 to 6/19 A couple things to consider: 1) The airfare from a given location varies according to departure date. For me, there's an increase once I leave on or after 6/1. Another increase occurs when 11/1 rolls around. The return date doesn't seem to matter. 2) When using priceline, initially bid a ludicrously low price. You'll get a response saying "We couldn't find a ticket for the price you bid, but we did find one for $X. You have one hour to buy it." Bid $20 under that (you may have to do this on a later day as the software seems to be pretty savvy - the counter-offers keep increasing if you try to be a smart-ass. It's almost like bartering with a live person. ) 3) Tickets cannot be changed in any way, so be sure of your travel plans. 4) You will get your travel dates, but the travel times will not be known to you until AFTER the ticket has been purchased. One time I got stuck with a 10-hour layover in Narita. This time I was lucky as my longest layover is 2 hours, 40 minutes, which is okay. 5) If you would rather know your specific flights, then priceline should not be used. Red-eye flights are best as you'll end up getting 3 or 4 hours of sleep helping to reduce jetlag. Also, be somewhat hungry when boarding the plane. It's a long, boring flight and you'll eat whatever you're offered. If you eat a full meal prior to boarding, you'll stuff yourself and be very uncomfortable. Take it easy on the alcohol to help avoid dehydration. 6) Another site worth looking at is: http://www.angeltravel.com/

  5. No, I don't know anyone who has done this. Now, consider a few points: 1) You're not going to be real fresh smelling after the long flight. 2) Getting intimate in the back of a car is something best left back in high school. You're in LOS. You deserve, and can get, much better. 3) Believe it or not, you want to pace yourself (I'm assuming of course that you're somewhere north of 18). 4) The same amount of baht can buy you a hell of a great party at FLB.
  6. I stayed there Jan-Feb. I got a rate of 1100 baht/day since I stayed more than two weeks. Very nice tiled floor. The bathrooms have a bath tub and a separate 2-person shower. The construction wasn't a problem. You do get a balcony view which is nice. Girl friendly? Hey, these are serviced apartments. They ain't your mother. No ID checks. What you do is up to you. Only complaints were: 1) The temperature-controlled A/C simply didn't function which meant that most times I simply left it off at night. 2) The pool on top was virtually deserted. So I usually just strolled through the Welkom Inn (just across the soi) over to the Sabai Lodge pool which has great ambiance and read the morning paper with a drink.
  7. Why waste money? 1) Take the skytrain to the Ekamai stop (10 baht) 2) Walk to the bus station (100-200 meters) 3) Air conditioned bus leaves for Pattaya every 30 minutes (90 baht) 4) When you arrive at Pattaya (travel time is the same as by car) a baht bus will drop you off on the usual route (20 baht) Total cost: 120 baht
  8. Not that I'm particularly knowledgeable, but my thoughts are.. 1) Your biggest requirement will be a translator since you want to get in-depth information. 2) You'll need to pay the katoey some amount (actually treating everyone to a meal might be a nice touch). 3) You might also want to a group interview with something like 3 katoeys, taping the discussion with your daughter acting as the moderator.
  9. "Those flights that you purchased via priceline.com, did they qualify for frequent flyer miles? " No. And I suppose in the spirit of honesty I should mention that on priceline.com you get what you pay for. Looking closer on my flight itinerary I see that I've got a 3-hour layover at Narita on the way to LOS. This is okay. However, on the way back to SFO I've got a 10-hour layover to look forward to. All this to save $35 from a known schedule on expedia.com.
  10. Your engles is quite good enough! I just got what I consider a good deal via priceline.com: SFO to BKK departing Oct 28. I bid $510 (after taxes and miscellaneous charges it ended up totaling $593.75). Keep in mind that different times of the year cost differently. After Nov 1 costs will increase about $100. I chose this time of year as the rainy season should have ended and the blissful cool season (such as it is) will have started. My last vist was in June and it was both hot and humid - though I still had a great time. I've checked out skyauction.com and have concluded that it's a waste of time. No way will you get a good price.
  11. There are dentist shops all over town. My guess - and it is only that - is that unless you're getting oral surgery then one dentist should be as good as another. The dentists will all speak English; at least well enough to communicate. As for rates, check out my trip report ("Steve's Most Excellent Adventure"). Suffice it to say that medical care in general in LOS is inexpensive and high quality.
  12. pee seu-uh Buy a dictionary. I recommend "Robertson's Practical English-Thai Dictionary" it's small enough to take with you when go out with your TG
  13. Pro: Location, location , location Con: There's nowhere to hangout during the day Summary: The Sabai Lodge on Soi 2 is a good (but different) alternative. It has a very nice pool where you can lounge about. Downside is that you have to use baht buses frequently, but that's really no big deal. Upside is that the Soi 2 bars (and the massage places: Sabai Dee, Sabai Land, and the other place across the street are nearby).
