  1. When I was working in SoCal, I had a Honda Civic. My $500 deductible cost me $1.600 per year. When I bitched to the insurance agent he told me the Honda Civic was the most stolen car in SoCal. I was able to save a couple hundred a year when I installed a theft alarm.
  2. This is from the international Big Mac price index in Dollars Link - http://www.oanda.com/currency/big-mac-index Big Mac in Thailand $2.23 US $4.07 UK $3.77 Australia $4.90 India $1.69 And for Gabor - Hungary $3.43
  3. Well Joe, the Giants "Big Big" talk was just confidence on their part. You were apparently amused with the prediction. Sometimes the bluster becomes true. I seem to remember another Joe who predicted a Superbowl win in advance. The Jets shocked everyone. LOL! This is what makes it fun.
  4. Joe, maybe you should recommend Randy Orton to be drafted. He is an athlete and maybe he can even throw a football. As far as the big game, I had to rely on the play by play on the Internet. Going by that, I thought the Giants simply out played Brady's bunch.
  5. Only the rear light? Try driving at night upcountry. I do carry a copy of my passport but never the passport itself. My five year Thai license is normally enough for hotels and even domestic air flights.
  6. Some of my favorite watering holes have no music at all. But you're right, most of the customers are us old farts. The younger crowd appreciates noise that quivers your gizzard. I usually go to a bar to talk, especially with pretty ladies. If all I wanted to do is drink, I could sit on the steps of a 7-11. I very seldom drink at home but make up for it when I have someone to bullshit with.
  7. Yes, it's entirely possible that I will never buy another lady drink. Keep in mind that in my opinion air conditioned bars are in a different league from hole in the wall beer bars. There is also a considerable distance between 100 baht and 140 baht. I can't remember a single Go Go bar that kept their music at a reasonable level. You are correct that some beer bars do their best to drown out the next beer bar. I don't frequent those places either. If I'm not mistaken the FLB uses a decibel meter to monitor sound levels even when they have a band. That may not be appreciated by all the custome
  8. I normally don't frequent Go Go bars because of the loud and usually obnoxious loud noise they call music. Any of that rap shit will see me quickly headed for the front door. As far as the other bars, I will likely buy several lady drinks at 100 baht each but not a single lady drink at 140 baht each. Beer bars that charge more than 100 baht for a small glass of Coke they call a lady drink are as far as I am concerned a rip off. If I happen to like a girl at a rip off bar, I will slip a 100 baht note in her skivvies and cut the bar's lady drinks totally out of the picture.
  9. I too was unable to contact them so I walked in there a week ago and found them in the midst of major renovations. They are indeed closed but it appears that the renovations are mostly finished. The renovations were sorely needed The last time I stayed there, the rooms had a major odor problem, not really a dirty smell but rather a strong musty odor. My two friend's rooms also had the strong musty odor.
  10. I have to agree with steamer. The day i have to pay 125 baht for a beer is the same day that I stop drinking beer. I paid 140 baht for a beer at Midnight in Soi Cowboy Bangkok (one beer) and gave my beautiful little companion a hundred baht tip rather than a 215 baht lady drink. I have NOT been back. Tourists may pay stupid prices but expats will not, at least not this expat.
  11. I was talking to friend about non-stop flights from BKK to LAX. His view was that the non-stop was entirely too long to sit and that he much preferred a one stop flight. Myself, I much prefer for the shortest non-stop trip time. Different strokes for different folks. As far as the Eva upgraded economy seats, you have to make your reservations as far in advance as possible. My last two inquiries both had all those seats sold out.
  12. Not Pattaya or sex related but amazing to say the least; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOjOGKu3jTc
  13. This post may no be entirely relevant because last week I had a BLT in the afternoon and not the evening. That cannot be compared with a full meal. The place was busy but my food came promptly. I do like a good BLT and I was actually impressed that it was much better that one I received several months ago. I should add that I would NOT put up with under cooked chicken.
  14. I use Siam Commercial Bank. I used another bank's ATM and it ate my card. I didn't bother to try to get it back. I went to my bank branch, cancelled the card, got a new card with a new password. I think the bank fee was 200 baht. Quick and easy. All the ATM machines I use have a limit of 20 bills. That is 20,000 baht. If I need more than that. I make a normal withdrawal from my account. I don't like to carry that much on my person anyways.
  15. I have had good and bad service from every airline I have tried. There is a big variation between between the type of planes and the routes. I seldom fly anymore but now my first priority is price. I will pay a bit more for better connections. I fly cattle class because cattle class gets there in the same amount of time as first class.
  16. From your post it appears to me that you are one of the naive farangs who thinks one party of politicians is more honest than another party. The fact is that they are all mostly corrupt and there is very little difference between any of them. Thaksin was no better or worse than the rest of the thieves. As long as Thai people respect wealth more than principles, nothing is going to change. Wealthy people are respected regardless of how they got their money.
  17. I don't remember what those units originally sold for but it appears to me that for two 60 square meter units, they are considerably overpriced. Other than that, it would be a great setup for someone who wants a bar on property that he actually owns and still have a place to live at the same time. Land lords are getting rich renting small bars to stupid farangs for ridiculous prices. Most of which struggle to even pay the rent and key money when their short leases expire.
  18. Young guys who are in their most productive earning years seem to ignore the fact that they will still need an income when they are ready to retire. Thailand is not big on pensions so a young guy would need his own retirement plan. Unfortunately teaching is normally only subsistence level living and it is not likely they will have enough income or discipline to build a decent pension plan.
  19. Why get half when you can get it all? I have seen farangs who have gone to court and were awarded half but they never received anything. A thirty year lease is pretty solid EXCEPT if the lease is from your wife. Same with a lifetime usufruct.
  20. I think that's the Jomtien Beach Condominium complex. He likely owns the units in his own name. Other than for the residents the location leaves a lot to be desired. I don't know the legalities involved as far as the business end of it, but it may be the only way to actually legally own the property here in Thailand.
  21. The crooked politicians are smarter than that. The sell the government owned land to stupid farangs and walk away with a pocket full of money and no risk. The politicians ARE the gangsters. Very obvious and blatant and nothing is done about it. The system is that you don't tell on me and I won't tell on you.
  22. It is my opinion that one day some powerful politician is going to wake up with a hard on and vow revenge on farangs for one reason or another. Thousands of farangs control property through these bogus companies. Better them than me. I like to sleep well at night and wouldn't like the feeling of impending doom. Buy a condo in your name and sleep well. If you are planning to get married to a Thai national, buy it BEFORE you marry her and she won't be able to touch it if the relationship goes pear shaped. Same advice for a vehicle. Anything bought after you are married will be marital proper
  23. Boring thread? This is everything you ever need to know about slow cookers and rice cookers. PLUS, much more. It's even possible that some people would starve to death without this information. I know of some Thai women who are not capable of making a cup of instant coffee much less cooking rice. Most of those types of women, fortunately, do have other important skills.
  24. Actually rice cookers are automatic. When you push the button down and start the cooker it gets hot enough to boil then switches by itself to a low temperature. to keep the rice warm after it is cooked. If you like, you can start it by moving the switch to the up position, which is warm, but that would not cook the rice.
  25. I still get them quite often in change here upcountry. I always empty my pockets on my computer desk when I get home. The coins must vaporize because the next day they are gone.
