You've mentioned this before, and for the life of me, I can't think what help you would need at getting a retirement visa. It's a do-it-yourself affair that requires a couple of hours of reading and a day, at most, of preparation. All steps are done with Thai institutions (banks, doctors, landlords, etc), and there is no need for your home country's foreign service...except for income verification, if that is the route you choose, rather than 800k+ bank account. So, did he help you verify your income? If he had done anything else, you were just bothering him for no good reason.

I'm don't recall exactly. I think it was close to 1K baht the last time I went there. Back in 2003, it was about 500b, so I was surprised when they presented me with the bill. Haven't been back.

I dropped into Xzone tonight, and have a couple of observations.... Lady drinks are now 125baht...not out of line really. I wanted a Diet Coke (Coke Light here in Thailand), and it was 120baht, so I said I'd have the draft beer instead, since I was simply in there for a reconnaissance mission. I was informed that there is no draft beer...and there won't be till next month. Forget the draft beer special..."no have". The cheapest drink on the menu is water at 90baht, with sodas and other non-alcoholic drinks coming in at 120baht. Everything else costs more. Beers were either 140baht or 150baht. For some reason, Tiger Light was the highest priced non-premium beer, though from my experience it costs virtually the same or less than the other beers coming in at 140baht. Corona, Spy, Breezers etc were all 180 baht. They have a menu with drinks and prices (but not lady drink prices), and from looking at it, I'd say the best deal (least gouging) is the spirits, since they cost the same (150b) generally as the beer, and the prices are in line with other "hi-so" gogos. The beer prices are definitely over the top, especially considering the relative lack of talent and the adjacent bar/gogo pricing. They had about a dozen girls in there, with a few cuties, and some old hands from before the new ownership took over. They also picked up some of the girls from Rhino Agogo who came with the mamasan they have recently hired. All in all, it wasn't that bad, and the few cute girls were entertaining. But, it's not cheap, and it's not in the top tier gogos who charge similar prices.

I've found that the guarantee/warranties on big ticket electronic items are manufacturer's warranties. If you have a problem, they say they have to send it to a manufacturer service center, which could take weeks or months. I bought 3 LCD TVs (Samsung) at the end of August 2011. One of them went on the fritz 5 weeks later. The store (Big C) said they would send it for repair, but it would take 4 weeks or more. I then took it to the local Samsung shop on Sukhimvit, and they said they'd fix it, but that it would only cover labor, not parts. I didn't get why, but I think it was something about a current surge blowing a major component. So, I had my Thai staff look around, and they found a "private" repair place that fixed it in a day, but it still cost half the cost of the new unit to fix. Just hope you don't have to use the warranty repair service.

Referring to Walking Dead...episode 1 aired the 17th in the USA. It is to air the 23rd here in Asia. I just started watching season 1 of Strike Back...good stuff, though there were a lot of those "saved by the bell" moments to preserve life and limb of some of the main actors. Still, it's good drama and action. Thanks for the rec.

Runaround. WIFI routers (transmitter/receivers) sold here are the same as those sold elsewhere. I have brought them from the States, and bought them here, and aside from voltage differences, they are the same. Oh, and for the original poster, most smaller hotels and guesthouses have a single broadband connection that is shared by all their wifi access points. Staying in a bigger hotel, targetted to business travellers (the big chains), will possibly get you "faster" internet access. But you will not get "really fast" internet in Pattaya. My information is not current (about 3 years old), but the LK Metropole had decent internet to the rooms (wired RJ45). I plugged in my own wifi router to that, and didn't share wifi with anyone else. I was still sharing the hotel's broadband link, but as I think they had more than one.

This is getting a little out of hand here, on several fronts. Okay, Xzone has new ownership, the new owner has come on and announced some changes. Another poster/userid is posting from the same IP address. Okay, maybe the same guy, maybe a partner, but definitely somebody close to the purported owner.
