  1. mulphy, you can upload the information and pictures about your guesthouse in the pattayapages.com Hotel section as well. Click on the HOTELS link at the top of this page to go there.
  2. Steve died mid-December this year...here is one thread about his death.
  3. Thanks for the discount, mulphy. I hope someone from the board can take advantage of it.
  4. If you're going to stay in Ao Nang (nice town, nice beach), I stayed at the Ao Nang Buri. It's reasonably priced in low season, is right across from the beach and my favorite outdoor night club (The Luna Bar)
  5. It means that there was a picture (image) in the post that wasn't accessible for some reason (internet time out or the picture was not accessible). Sometimes, if you right click and then choose SHOW PICTURE, the image will appear. Other times, it just isn't there, for example if someone closed their picture hosting account or deleted the picture after posting a link to it.
  6. There are outages sometimes...especially if it rains and the power lines start sparking and shorting (as they frequently do here). Then all the network gear goes down and we lose connectivity. It's nowhere near 5 9's but when it works (which is probably 95% of the time), it works fine. This is Thailand and sometimes things don't work. Big deal, wait a bit and they will...mai bpen arai. Now if they could only eliminate that pesky 15 hour time difference to the western USA, I'd be really happy.
  7. Works fine for me here in Pattaya. Only problem is when I call my mother...she's still used to AT&T voice quality (CBR rather than VBR or VOIP). She doesn't like cell phone calls either . Other callee's seem fine with the quality and delay characteristics.
  8. rockin's right. The calendar is the way to find out who's in town.
  9. Follow up on the Metropole internet charging.... They apparently have implemented the timed system for new customers. The long stay residents I spoke to can avoid the timed system by paying 2000B/month for unlimited internet access. Since I was doing that all along, my connection is exempt. I don't know if they have an option for monthly residents to pay 2000B for unlimited access rather than buying the timed access. Bandwidth problems seem to be better. I have been getting 1.6mpbs download speeds recently.
  10. I should put a follow up on the Metropole thread. They apparently have implemented the timed system for new customers. The long stay residents I spoke to can avoid the timed system by paying 2000B/month for unlimited internet access. Since I was doing that all along, my connection is exempt. What I'll do is find out if they have an option for monthly residents to pay 2000B for unlimited access rather than buying the timed access.

    Up for sale

Post moved to new forum subtopic "The Market"
  12. Looking at your list, the LK Metropole would satisfy all your requirements, except for price. See this topic for FLB discounted rates. Good luck at finding what you want for that price. If you do, I will consider moving there as well.
  13. I've seen various references to the busy soi that runs parallel between 2nd road and 3rd road. I've even seen some spellings that I thought were "incorrect". However, a ride down this soi today shows that you can pretty much spell it any way you want! Here are 8 signs along the street Soi Buakhow. Only 2 of them agree on the spelling.
  14. Sometimes, the picture just isn't available anymore. If you have a red x, it means the forum software could not find (or timed out loading) the picture from the location indicated in the post. To see where the photo should be, right click and Properties on the image box. It will show you the actual internet location (URL) for the photo. This frequently happens when someone posts a report using a photo sharing service, and then the service shuts their account down. Anyway, to give you better assistance, it would help if you would give the URL to the topic where the photos are not appearing. Then it can be determined if there are, in fact, missing photos in the topic. Otherwise, we're just guessing.
  15. Lot's of good hats in attendance! I'll try to make the next one if I can find a hat.
  16. Obviously I've asked Yu if she'd come back as a mamasan if she sells the bar. No answer yet, and this is not my (main) motivation for posting this. Just trying to help out a couple of people I like.
  17. Yu, the owner of The Chica Bar, asked me to post for her that the bar is for sale. The asking price is 1.6M THB. There is key money of 600K THB paid for 3 years, with 2 more years remaining. The monthly rent is 30K THB. If you have any questions, drop by the Chica Bar and speak to Yu.
  18. Great photos! I think this topic should be in the open section where even non-members can see it. I'll leave a link in the members bar so you can find it. Great photos! 19. Silly silly! Guests already pay 2000B/month for what was once unlimited internet access. Now they are required to login/logout when they use the internet or they will run up huge bills. I spoke to the reception staff and they indicated they are getting a lot of complaints/questions about it and don't know for sure what the policy really is. The manager wasn't available when I went down there. I should point out that they told me I could get a direct line to my room and subscribe directly with an ISP if I wanted to. That actually might be a better alternative for long stay guests...cheaper too.
  20. Late breaking news about the LK Metropole internet stance. After "upgrading" their system (doubling the broadband external connection), installing a security system and a new traffic policing policy, the in room bandwidth is now limited to a fraction of what it was before these "upgrades". I'm lucky to get 600kbps now, where before I was getting 2mbs. But, the final straw is this note I received from the hotel today: I'll be speaking with the management to find out how serious they are about this money-grubbing scheme. With any luck, they'll rescind it, but for now, take note that this is not an internet user friendly hotel. Also, there is a note on the gym saying that there is now a charge for use of the gym...something like 2000B/month. I don't know if that applies to guests or outsiders who want to use the gym (something I have yet to do).
  21. You might consider adding a review to the Hotel Review section (click on HOTELS on the top of this page). Click on Bay Breeze here to get to the review for that hotel.
  22. An update on LK Metropole internet issues. The download speeds have been increasing lately, but the internet, in general, is sporadically timing out. But, that is most likely the result of a general problem with the internet throughout most of Thailand, caused by the Taiwan earthquake on 26 Dec. That should be fixed. However, when the internet was working, I was able to periodically get download speeds of 1.6Mbps again. But, a problem that I have pointed out to the IT group is that, because of their new security/login software for their ADSL connections, it has made it impossible to use www.flickr.com. If you go to flickr.com, click on any picture or second item off the main page, you get logged off the ADSL connection and have no internet access. They are scratching their heads on this one and have gone back to the security software vendor for a fix. Could be years, since they might have bought the software at tuk.com for 120B So, if you use flickr, and stay at the LK Metropole, you're out of luck for accessing your account.

    Mexican Jews

Bold part of your response says it all, though it does make light of Mexican pronunciation of English, but that is what makes it funny. Nobody got hurt in the making or telling of this joke.
  24. It's free draft beer (no limit that I saw on how many glasses) for the 90 minutes and a raffle for a single bar fine. And, it's well appreciated by those who attend. Presumably, those who attend will take the time to buy a few drinks of their own, but it's not mandated. Tipping the service staff is also appropriate behavior, even if your bill is zero.
  25. Excellent restaurant indeed. Don't make it too popular, because even when there are few customers, sometimes the service is a bit slow. That was my initial impression there where I waited 45 minutes for my entree. They have gotten much better on subsequent visits, however, so that shouldn't be a problem.
