Thai has male and female 1st person pronouns that are used in proper Thai, unlike any of the European languages I am familiar with (Englsh, German, French, Spanish, Italian). So, when speaking of oneself, a Thai female refers to herself with a different form of "I" than a Thai male...not sure about ladyboys though. Happily, they don't use gender qualifiers for nouns or 2nd or 3rd person pronouns (that I know of), which makes the language somewhat easier to learn grammatically. The particles for politeness are gender specific to the person speaking, not the person being spoken to, hence ka and krap.

"let them"? I don't think anyone on here has much choice about that. BTW, in my experience, the worst drivers in Thailand are the non-Thais, especially westerners...can't tell you how many times I see someone driving in a pushy, arrogant, non-yielding way, and come up alongside them and it's a farang. Thais do break the rules (a lot!), but they are generally quick to yield and accomodate others. Westerners get bull-headed about it and tend to mess up the whole rhythm of the driving scene.

The perennial holiday makers comes from seeing the same faces over time at ibar late nights. I haven't been doing that so much but still see them heading into ibar after 2am many nights. I fully expect a decrease in their numbers with this new crackdown. Another thing is reported to me by friends. . Perhaps I didn't make myself clear enough. I said "those who don't qualify for any long stay visa". I'm referring to the perennial holiday younger guy, not serious people who actually might be planning to get work, go to school, or spend 500K-2M baht for an Elite Card. There is a large number of them..Their numbers will likely dwindle as a result of this, which was my conclusion. The cheapest option, ED, are getting harder to get and they are clamping down on those as we discuss this...possibly it's not a reliable future option ...and from the lifestyles of many of the younger crowd I see, many wouldn't be able to make it to school anyway. B and getting a job..not as easy as that...who will hire that many of them? Of course they can form their own company and with a 20M baht capitalization (as I recall), escape the requirement for 4 Thais on social insurance and tax rolls for each foreign work permit. That has a lot of cost associated with it, but yes, with a good deal of money, someone could do that..if they could be shown to have a legitimate business...labor department does come to look at the work site, engineering approvals are required...not something the Ibiza crowd is likely to get involved with. My point is that the options are limited for those unmarried under 50 who want to stay and just be in holiday mode.

This clampdown will have a serious effect on those under 50 who don't qualify for any long stay visa. I think a result of this will be a reduction in the younger "Ibiza" crowd who have been living here on tourist visas or "out-in" 30 day stamps. It won't matter if they have money or not, whether they work or not...just their age will be working against them. I'm wondering if the disco crowds will start to dwindle as a consequence, cutting back on the freelancers' income stream (unless, as some of these guys say, they are getting it for free), and then these top tottie who have been freelancing might migrate back to the bars and gogos. There might be an increase in marriages though. There might be many knock-on changes from this enforcement in the demographics of the scene.

What I was noticing along 2nd Road and Walking Street was that the amount of lights and businesses seemed to be "normal"..if you look at the pictures above, you can see many lighted signs, primarily for restaurants and other non bar related businesses. On 2nd Road, if someone didn't know that a normal night would have bars and lights where the shut businesses were, they wouldn't notice anything but bright lights and a city street alive with tourists and commerce. What it says to me is that bar and gogo entertainment is a tiny fraction of most of the city's businesses. It may be stating the obvious, but I do believe many have the impression that Pattaya is all about bars and gogos...when in fact, they are a small part of the landscape compared to all the other commercial activities out there. Of course some streets are totally dark when the bars close..soi 6, much of soi Diana, the side sois off of Walking Street...and long parts of Soi Buakhao, but unlike a curfew where everything shuts and it goes dark, removing just the bars is not that noticeable..to me, at least.
