Money Changer (TCs) close to Sabai Lodge

It looks like I will be staying at the Sabai Lodge for my next trip, and I was wondering if there is a bank, or other facility nearby to change travelers checks. I think Big C has some changers, but I believe that banks often offer the best rates.

I have to go all the way down to soi 13 by the penthouse to cash Visa TCs, what kind of TCs are you cashing? Maybe someone else will know?

There is an outdoor currency exchange booth next to the steps leading into SabaiLand on the corner of 2nd Road and Soi 3 (it also has an ATM). There is another exchange outdoor booth a couple of blocks away. In the Mall (Festival Center) there is a bank (although I’ve never used it) and a couple of ATMs by the 1st floor Big C store entrance.

 

I’m sure there are others in the area although I haven’t really looked.

theres a money changer in soi 6..down near the beach end.that doesn't charge commission for travellers cheques.and once you go there the first time..they keep your records..so next time you go..don't have to take your passport

The three nearest are all on 2nd Road at the junction of Soi 3 (Sabailand), Soi 4 (Thai Palace Hotel) and past Soi Zero outside Tiffany Show.

If they are American Express TCs then find out who the Amex agent in Pattaya is. You will not have to pay a per check commission there. You may even get a better rate. And in many countries they dont ask for passport and so on - I dont know about Pattaya.

Everyone else, including banks, will charge you a commission.

Walking St opposite to Family Mart

 

This is down past the FLB {going towards the pier, same side of street}, the place is commission free for TC's and gives a very good rate.

Also if you wander onto Soi 6 {Yodsak}, just about 1 block past the Queen Victoria Inn, there is a comission free exchange place. It's on the same side of the street as the Queen Vic. I suppose you could take in the sights located there also..?

 

The commission free places will save you 23 Baht or so on the exchange rate.

There is a small booth going up beach road from soi 2 past soi 1 where the old metropolitan bank used to be. Always check your change here because one or two of the tellers will short change you if they can. You are much better off on the second road by soi3 which also has an atm.

Greg, please note that the commission is a 20 baht transaction fee plus 3 baht per check (unless its changed recently). So if you have small denomination checks you will pay a much larger commission - it wont break you, but if you care about such things its good to know.

if you take a left out of soi 2 big c end 20 meters or so there is a kodak shop that changes money very good rates,but the bonus is there is never a que well not the times i have been there anyway.my tg took me there saying very good here,no wait long time which made me check the rate and my money incase she was getting a cut like some of the gold shops.

I remember money changers in Kong Kong on Nathan Rd. that would try to entice you with a "no commission" or "low commission" sign, and then offer a much poorer exchange rate than others.

 

I wonder how these honest money changers in Pattaya make a profit when taking no commission?

Last time I was there {Jan 2004}, the best rate was the no commission places, I'll be there in Sept 2004 and do a cross-check comparison to see if that still applies

I believe the Big C has a bank on the second floor. No clue what the rates are though.
