Travel Insurance

Recommended Posts

I am wondering if anyone has any recent experience with the purchase of travel insurance to re-coop your ticket price if you become ill and cannot travel. If you buy a relatively high priced fare (business class on Singapore, for example), it seems that some sort of insurance to protect against loss would be prudent. AFAIK, this type of insurance is not available through the airline itself. Appreciate tips from personal experience.

No, I have never needed to make a claim. If you look at the link, they are brokers for a lot of insurance companies. I usually get a Travelex policy (you see their currency exchange booths in US airports and many other countries) or Access America.

I'm looking at changing my travel insurance company as my current provider (Halifax) have put in one increase too many. For those of you in the UK, Marks & Spencer looks good at about £41 for an annual policy.

Many credit card companies in the US offer free travel insurance if you charge the cost of your travel tickets/package on their card. I have never made a claim with them.

United gave me a 100% refund with a doctors note. Without the doctor's note I would have recieved a full refund minus 150 bucks on my "non-refunadble" ticket.

Priceline gave me a full hotel refund minus 25 bucks a night but they don't publicize this. Normally I would have secured a hotel room with a credit card since so many Thailand hotels will take a reservation without one, but the ShangriLa at 55 bucks a night was too good to pass up.

Most of what I get is health insurance. I purchase tickets direct from EVA and would have had no problem getting tickets changed. I always put the cost of my trip very low, enough to cover a minor amount of non-recoverable pre-paid costs and change fees.

Thanks for that Alan.

I would never have thought of checking M & S

I've only had one experience with a non-refundable ticket and that was with Southwest Airlines. Their policy was that I received a credit with them in which I had a year to use it. I assumed that this policy was standard among the air carriers that I use that I have never worried about purchasing travel insurance because if I can't fly when scheduled, I will use it later.

Good point! So, it looks like I won't really need any insurance to cover that cost. Although I think I might sleep better knowing I am covered for the price of the ticket if I end up not being able to go on the trip for some reason. I suppose it will be possible to use the medical facilities in Pattaya should the need arise.

For any medical emergencies check with your current health plan to see if your covered. I'm with Kaiser and they will cover me, probably would be happy if something were going to happen to me that it would occur in LOS where the costs are but a fraction of what they would be here.

SoCalGuy,

For my September trip, I purchased travel insurance through Travel Insured: www.travelinsured.com (800) 243-2440

If you visit the www.insuremytrip.com site mentioned above, enter your personal data and desired coverage, the cheapest price to display will likely be "Travel Insured - Worldwide Trip Protector."

My cost was $55 for 17 days, and included the following coverage:

Trip Cancel: To Cost, up to $20,000 per person

Trip Interupt: 150% trip cancellation limit

Travel Delay: $150 day...$500 after 6 hours

Missed Connection: $300

Lost Baggage: $1,000

Baggage Delay $200

Emergency Medical/Dental: $50,000

Emergency Medical Transport: $250,000

24 hour accidental Death/Dismemberment: $10,000

24 hour assistance: Included

Did not have to file a claim.

Worked perfect for me as I was inbetween health insurance plans for those 17 days.

As previous posters have mentioned, similar coverage may be provided for in the purchase of your airline ticket and by holding personal medical insurance.

But, it is nice to have certain reimbursement for an airline ticket, travel/baggage delay...and an international medical insurer who will likely better assist you, and facilitate your claim, if you end up in a Pattaya hospital.

Have a good trip,

Bill

Wbill,

Great information, thanks a lot! It seems like quite a bit of coverage for a mere $55, but if they are a top notch insurance company then I will rest assured they will be there. Thanks again for the tip.
