New Airport Opening later this year

Recommended Posts

The new airport is closer to Pattaya than the old one. Not sure about travel time but maybe around 1 1/4 hours or so?

According to latest reports from Khun Thaksin, the new airport will be operational from the latter half of June. :allright

It's more or less signposted now - an hour and a quarter is a pretty good guess of the driving time to pattaya ( my wife has a condo very near to the airport). Difficult to actually see the airport even from the tollroad - coming out of bangkokyou go past the big central store at bangna and the airport is past the turn off to lat krabang and before the big tower on the left that is assumption university - the other way to think of it is there is maybe just over 20 minutes left from the airport before the tollroad heading out of bangkok finishes at what i think in effect is the beginnings of the chonburi bypass.

Just curious,

if the new airport is closer to Pattaya, will that mean the travel to central BKK area (ex: Suk Rd) will probably cost alot more by taxi along with more travel time? :chogdee2

To Sukhumvit? It's probably still the same distance.

Haven't heard any news about whether we will have to pay more on the departure taxes to subsidize the new airport. Current Departure tax is 500b, so don't know if this will go up or not?

Departure tax for new airport is 1000b

Ouch! A 2x increase in the departure tax?! Can any one confirm?

But I guess that isn't much for an improved location, and nicer facility.

Just think how pissed off you would be if they put it on the other side of the city! Be thankful for small things!

I also think Q1 2007 is probably a good guess for the opening. Does anyone know if there will be a single transition, or will airlines be flying to both airports for a while (In Thailand this might be a year or two)?

I had read earlier its about 55 kilometers closer to Pattaya than the old one. It will be about the same distance to centeral Bangkok. Should eliminate the cost of2 toll booths and hopefully the costs to and from Pattaya will decrease. Saw a piece on a Thai news channel where they were testing the baggage handling system last week.

Is the new airport going to handle domestic flights as well as international flights? I reckon I'll be making a fair bit of use of the domestic terminal over the next year or two, though I'll try to avoid flying in or out immediately after it becomes operational, whenever that may be. :D

On your way to Pattaya you can see the signposts to the new airport since at least a half year.

Probably the domestic flights will stay on Don Muang, but there're rumours that the airport will be rented out to the USAF.

Departure tax will increase - I've heard 800 but it may be 1000. However it will be included in the ticket price.

Hi,

Read in Bangkok Post that they are building a rail link to Bangkok, there was some trouble about buying the land. There is a rail link at DM into Bangkok Hulamphong that I have used a few times but I think it's not very regular. The new rail link for new airport is a dedicated shuttle link, I believe.
