Off Season Walk Ups

I am getting to the stage where I think I might be better to get a cab to Patts and try for a walk up vacancy. This cannot be too hard during the off season surely?

 

My thoughts was to drop off at any one of the Soi 8 hotels and if that one is full drag the suitcase to the next one a few yards away.

I am there mid June by the way.

 

My questions are.

 

Do any of you do this?

Is there any saving in the day rate?

Are there any downsides?

 

I just hate paying it all in advance (and most travel co's seem to demand the lot) and sharing my credit card information.

Surely, you can do that in the off season. I've tried it in Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket. Just show up and get a room for a day or two. Once you're there, you can always move to another hotel if you want.

Hotels are willing to wheel and deal on rates during low season. I've seen pay for 10 stay 14 nights on soi 8.

Generally speaking, if you're walking up, they know you're comparison shopping and can just as easily leave and "walk up" to someplace else. However erroneously, the hotel owners don't seem to think you're comparing prices if you contact them via their website. TIT, as with all else.

 

I suppose too many of our brethren making reservations, blocking out a room and then not honoring the reservation has led to the proliferation for demands of upfront payment or a credit card deposit, and while it is a hassle or imposition for me, I can understand their side of that issue.

 

As long as you don't need anything too specific in your accomodations (e.g., you have to have a hard-wired, hi-speed Internet connection in the room), then I'd say you're not only going to have no trouble in securing a room via walking up to a front desk in June, July or Auguest, but you'll be apt to land one at a discount, or with free days or breakfast thrown in.

Pattaya must be different than BKK or elsewhere as my experience has been just the opposite. I've not tried a walk-up in Pattaya, well actually I have, last September, and one place was booked solid and the other two I looked at quoted me, as they do in BKK, their "rate rate" which is their highest rate. Ended up sticking with the hotel I had originally booked as no one offered me anything better than what I already had.

Low season, you will find a place to stay as a walk-in. It can depend where, and if it is a weekend or holiday. Remember Pattaya is Bangkok's weekend getaway.

A couple of things regarding walk ups and getting a good rate. One is you need to arrive when the manager is on site and not 2 AM when you have someone at the desk who has no power to offer you a low rate. Also the longer your staying then generally the better chance you have of getting a large discount. Another thing to keep in mind this year is that the World Cup will be taking place during the month of June and the Soi 8 area is very popular.

numer one low season is no guarantee. the biggest problem I had last year. I went without advance bookings for trips in april, june, july, august, november. In every single case I had problems. You find a place but they only have 2 nights available. In 5 different times I had to check out and mo ve to a differnt hotel becuase nothing opened up at the hotel I was in. You may find that dynasty has open room but only for 2 nights. you check in and then check every day for cancelations. on day 3 you check out and find new hotel. In july I had to contact something like 15 hotels to find a room. They idea of a low season is a joke. I have seen times when the bars were almost empty but the hotels were all full. Over the last couple of years that seem to be happening alot.
