Health Insurance

Recommended Posts

I plan on moving to Pattaya from the United States next year. As I have just turned 65 and have signed up for medicare here I learn that it will do me no good outside of the USA. So it looks as if I will need to obtain some type of health insurance to cover me in LOS.

Any idea what such a plan would cost? I am in good health with no impairments.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm 61 and have health insurance through a company named LMG Pacific. It's an American company. The insurance agent is on Second road in Pattaya. This link will put you in touch with them;

If you've just turned 65, you could find it very difficult to get health insurance cover in Thailand from scratch. It's less of a problem if you've been with a company for a number of years. Still, check out the company Gary suggested as they may be able to help.

In a similar vein, does anyone know of a company that offers cover that doesn't exclude existing health complaints - e.g. high blood pressure? Mine is under control so long as I take the pills every day. The premium would obviously be higher but I could live with that.

Alan, I am moving next month and also face the same exclusion of existing medical conditions. I have worked in insurance most of my working life and unfortunately have never found a company prepared to offer this cover. The exclusion applies to all contracts no matter what country they are issued in. But if there any boardies that know of a market there are now two of us who would like to hear from you.

That does help! :beer I'm pretty certain that the SFA won't make the mistake of offering the job to a non-Scot again.

Pre-existing condition exclusion in the US has a time limit. Perhaps this is the same everywhere.

This means if you had blood pressure problems and they went away and stayed away for 5 years, the exclusion stops.

Drugs used to keep bp down may not qualify for this, however.

If this is the problem, I think you're best bet is to draft a letter and shotgun email it out to everyone that asks just what ailments are excluded by bp.

That may vary from company to company.

You just have to accept that insurers are not in exsitance to help you in time of need, they are there to make money.

They won't insure you for flooding, if you live near a river, they won't insure you for rockfall near a mountain. If you are doing anything risky, you have to pay a huge amount, to get any cover. Like Banks, they don't produce a thing, no goods- nothing. You can't walk around their store to see if their product is better than the one down the road, you have to take their word for it- bloody crooks. :drunk

I guess for a guy 65 yrs old in good health self insurance is not a bad idea when you look at the overall cost of Thai health coverage. I have the assets to allow for this and if needed could always return to the USA and use Medicare.

Given that whatever ails you permits a trip back to the USA. A friend recently suffered a stroke here and paid a bill of 1.3 million baht at the hospital. Now at an annual insurance premium of 50k baht it would take 26 years of premuims before self assurance became financially advantageous.....but that said the guy had insurance and they weaseled out of 75% of the cost liability.

At 65 you would obviously have to shop around for someone to even offer cover......hate that word cover, as if paying the insurance company 'protects' you against any bad fortune! :clueless
