Hi guys , I'm arriving on Monday. Will I get a better rate of exchange for my dollars at the airport or at one of the exchange places in Pattaya ? I seem to remember it being better at one of the places on Second Road. Anyone know for sure??

I use either the one inside Tops or the Kodak shop outside Sabai Dee. Often the Kodak shop has the best exchange rates but not always.

If you chack the bank rates here for example

on 8 december it was

USD : 50-100

bank buying 35.23

bank seling 35.83

Average 35.53

In those 2 places you normally get the average or better.

The 'GOLD' Exchange (50yards in on the left) Soi Rungland Village (Pattaya Tai) generally beats the rest of the Town's rates............but unless youre chopping up for a couple of saen....whats the point of searching - a few points of a baht aint killing anyone.

UK people - best rate is out the ATM with a Nationwide Flex account (No fees and flat 0% bank2bank rate). But one account/card will only allow £300 / song muen per day (best to have two or three).

Always less then you get in Thailand,so also in Denmark i think an expensive way to start your holiday.

At the airport are several ATM machines as well as change offices, you don,t need any baht before that.

It,s very simpel, there,s no trade in Thai baht outside Thailand, banks have to buy baht specially for the exchange market, now knowing how banks like to make their money, where do you think to get the best deal?

My advise, change a little bit but enough for 1-2 days at the airport and change the rest in town.

Differences are small and between best and worse rate you can save at most a few beers :clueless

Let me add a related question please, I am arriving next Saturday the 6th, will I be able to convert USD travellers checks on Saturday in Patts, or do I need to get enough at the airport to last me till Monday?? Will also have some US greenbacks, $100's, which I could use to get me through the weekend.

In my experience of arriving and departing in December, the the rates offered for £ at Suv airport were as good as most places in Pattaya. Wish this was the same in other airports around the world

Hi,

In my experience I get say, 20,000Tbt at the airport on arrival as thats enough to get me going for the first few days.

During the first few days I keep an eye on the various banks and kiosks but I have yet to notice any real difference!! i.e. one that would make it worthwhile getting a baht bus to the otherside of town to draw the equivalent of say £200!!! Often the airport is best??

Am I wrong???

Regards

The exchange rate for the US dollar has always been bad at the airport. Last month it was consistently about 50 satang (half a baht) less than what you could get in Pattaya. I wish I had noted the exact figures, but I didn't. Maybe next time I will, out of curiousity.

Yes, sometimes the difference in rates between money changers in town is so little that it doesn't seem worthwhile looking for a good rate. However, for some people it becomes a challenge, I guess, maybe a game. And it does have serious consequences - it brings in competition which in turn helps lower rates. You may think your $100 doesn't mean much - but when 20 or 50 people decide to bypass a money changer because he is charging 2 satang more, it begins to hurt him!

In most countries the exchange rates you get in airports are not so good, but BKK is an exception as it's the same as the normal bank rates. If you're wise and change outside the banks you can get more - often half way between buying and selling rates in the banks.

As an after my trip aside on this. There is a money changing joint on Second Rd. , between Soi 2 and Soi 1 that gave a much better rate then the airport. The best I fouind on my trip.

How many days later was that? Rates vary over time, for the comparison to be valid you'd have to check prices on the same day.

I usually change money where and when I feel safe doing so. Like NOT next to a moto rank!

If a few baht here or there made that much difference I wouldn't be going on holiday.

Best "cash" rate in Pattaya is always the exchange booth within Tops on Pattaya Klang without exception.

Its also the worst for travellers cheques !!

I'm assuming you mean Tops Market for you exchanging money.

Since Tops is 24 hours what are the hours for the exchange booth and where is it in the store?

I shopped there last year and didn't notice the exchnage place .

Thanks for the help

Hours are 11:00-22:00 and as "Anfield" said, it's inside Top's at the entrance nearest Beach Rd.
