Boeing Delivers 11 More Jets in 3Q on Improving Demand

Boeing (BA: 69.24 ,0.00 ,0.00%) said it delivered 9.7% more passenger jets in the third-quarter.

 

The plane maker delivered 124 jets last quarter, up from 113 a year ago.

 

Boeing’s 737 Next Generation model led with 100 deliveries, followed by 21 Boeing 777 deliveries and three 767s. No 747s were delivered last quarter.

 

So far this year 346 jets have been delivered in total.

 

The company has been slowly recovering from recessionary headwinds last year that sent its fiscal 2009 deliveries down 61% from the previous year.

 

Last month the Chicago-based company said it plans on boosting production of its 737 plane to 38 a month in 2013 to meet higher future demand as economic conditions rebound.

CHICAGO (AP) -- Boeing Co. says it has received orders for 30 more of its 737s in the past week.

 

Boeing's weekly order update on Thursday did not say who is buying the planes.

 

Boeing customers have ordered 382 of those planes so far this year, out of a total of 422 orders for all commercial planes. The 737 have a list price of between $51 million to $87 million, although discounts are common.

 

The 737 can carry anywhere from 110 to more than 200 people, depending on the version of the plane and how it is set up. It is typically used on domestic flights, and competes with the Airbus A320.

Not that long ago, the Boeing (NYSE: BA) story was all about the 787. "The most successful launch of a new commercial airplane in Boeing's history" was going to transform Boeing, leapfrog Airbus and its dratted A380 flying elephant, and secure decades of growth for America's premier airplane maker.

 

That may still be the case (despite a few, ahem, setbacks). But lately, it's been looking like Boeing's real ace in the hole is 50 clicks lower on the altimeter. Specifically, at the 737 level. Last week, Boeing announced a blockbuster sales week -- seven days, 104 new aircraft sold. Not content to coast, Boeing followed that announcement with an even better one yesterday. Penciling in 30 new 737s on its order book, Boeing has now sold more planes in the last two weeks -- 134 total, with all disclosed orders being 737s -- than it sold in all of last quarter (124).

 

Boeing's playing coy on who ordered the latest batch of planes (worth as much as $2.6 billion at list prices), but whoever's fronting the cash, one thing is clear: Boeing's 737 has become a major success story. And once more, General Electric (NYSE: GE), United Technologies (NYSE: UTX), and Honeywell (NYSE: HON) owe Boeing a thank-you note for all the new business they'll be doing, providing plane parts.

 

Bigger and better

Investors have already lifted Boeing stock 6% since the start of last week. But fasten your seat belts, folks, because peering out the porthole, I see more good news coming down the runway. Three times in the past five months, Boeing has upped the production rate on its 737, either in response to or in anticipation of new orders (and perhaps a little of both).

The edges of Everett's Paine Field are turning into an overflow airplane parking lot as 787 Dreamliners roll out of Boeing's assembly plant. The planes aren't flying anywhere soon: Instead of engines, they have big yellow concrete blocks hanging from the wing pylons.

 

On Wednesday, 13 production Dreamliners and one flight-test airplane were parked at Paine Field. Four more completed planes are in storage. By mid-February, at least 10 additional Dreamliners could roll out and need a temporary parking space.

 

Boeing must continue to churn out the jets in anticipation of federal certification and the beginning of deliveries in mid-February.

 

Six flight-test airplanes are flying, and one of the production models is expected to fly as an add-on to the flight-test program sometime next month. The other planes will likely sit there until the Federal Aviation Administration certifies the jet early next year.

 

With the Boeing flight line full, five Dreamliners are now parked in unaccustomed spots.

 

Boeing has leased space from the airport on the west side of the runway outside the Future of Flight aviation center, where two Royal Maroc 787s and one Japan Airlines (JAL) 787 sit in a new airplane-parking area. Another two 787s, one for JAL and one for LAN Airlines of Chile, are parked next to Highway 526 outside Boeing's giant assembly building.

 

In anticipation of the rush of 787s ahead of first delivery and to allow for expansion, Snohomish County spent $5.5 million to build a taxiway around the north end of the airfield that connects to the new ramp area adjacent to the Future of Flight.

The Seattle Times reported that suppliers of other major airplane sections have been told to hold up deliveries while Alenia catches up. The report said Alenia has found manufacturing errors in the smaller wings on the aircraft's tail.

 

Boeing spokeswoman Lori Gunter said the pause will last about two weeks, but won't affect Boeing's schedule for delivering the first 787 to All Nippon Airways early next year.

 

This is the third time this year that Boeing has suspended shipments of major 787 parts to Everett because of problems with components.
