Reducing Pic Size

I want to reduce the size of pics taken on a digital camera so I can email them.

 

Any recommendations for a program to reduce pic size?

If that's all you're doing, you can do that in Windows or Mac OS.

 

For a cheap photo editor, this is pretty excellent for the price.

I use a program called Visualizer. This is the link to their free download site. You can batch re-size. Very easy to use. Visualizer. Click on the "No Thanks Limited Only" in the center of page then download freeware.

When I'm in a rush, I use PhotoGadget resizer. It's free.

 

When I'm not in a rush, I use photoshop and tweak it at the same time.

 

PhotoGadget is not lossless, so if you resize one or two times and rotate, you may end up degrading the quality of the picture quite a bit. Better to do it all at once in photoshop or gimp and then save it once.

You're nuts to pay for one. This is an area where freeware is arguably better than anything you can buy.

 

Visualizer is very good. Fastone is very good at http://www.faststone.org/

 

Pixresizer is an old favourite at http://bluefive.pair.com/

 

If you just want to do a few pics once in a while, The Image Resizer Powertoy from Microsoft is really excellent. It adds a function so that when you right-click on any picture, one of the menu choices is to resize. Very nice:

This has to be the best resizer available at any price. You can do any of the common sizes or roll your own. Only problem is it doesn't work on vista and there are no plans to upgrade it. Google is your friend. There are dozens of good choices out there. Picasa, Irfanview, Faststone viewer, Paint.net all have Vista versions and free for the download.

Yes there are lots of them & i actually studied digital photo editing at uni for a while & when starting from scratch a lot of programs such as photoshop can be very complex. I agree with Mr Kicker & mykl & also often use the microsoft image resizer when i want to shoot of some pics in an email as its just so damn easy. Right click & away ya go

If you want to do a simple resize or change in quality, then I'd recommend Image Magick. It's a command line image management tool, but it's quite simple to use.

 

To resize pictures, simply use the the following syntax

 

convert filename -resize xsizeXysize newfilename ( convert 1.jpg -resize 640x480 1_resized.jpg)

 

There is also the 'mogrify' command to apply to many images at one time. I take a copy of the images and apply the following command (mogrify -resize 640x480 -quality 65% -strip *.jpg)

Alternatively, get yourself a free photo hosting account and simply e-mail the link. It is useful if the person at the other end is going to want to print the original picture.

 

Also be aware that simply resizing the pic won't necessarily reduce the actual file size by the amount you want. If the original is decent quality (say 300 dpi) and you only want to view it on a monitor you'll need a program that will also reduce the quality of the file down to something like 70 dpi.
