Increased Hotel prices for high season ?

Recommended Posts

I've just noticed that the nightly internet rate for the Sabai Inn from 1st November is 1200 baht. Last year during Novemver I paid 1000. Is this sort of increase prevelent at other hotels ?.

That's quite a coincidence because I was just looking at that same site with a view to bookingin November and noticed the same thing. Not only is it an increase in Baht but with the Pound falling it is even more expensive.

So is it a try on? Is it worth waiting until nearer the time to see if their rates fall? I guess that will depend on what the take up is at that rate - and who can predict that!

Always worth e-mailing the Sabai (or it was when Care was the one in charge) as they nearly always offer a discount on published rates.

Nearly all hotels raise the rates in the high season.

From what I tell.....the "end" of low season pricing is 31 October.

Has something to do with supply and demand.

More demand....higher prices

Yes, we know that!! 1200 is their high season rate. The point is that the high season rate this year is 200 more than the high season rate last year!

the rates for Sabai Inn seem to have gone up about 200 a night for both standard and superior rooms, partly I guess to pay for the new carpet!

I have stayed there for the last few years and really like the place, not able to make it this year, but was thinking of trying somewhere new anyway in a new part of town when I hopefully return in 2009, and I guess those new rates have decided it for me-maybe look at Pattaya Bay resort,so long as they don't put the rates up as well.

Every hotel has to raise their rates some time.

Costs rise every year and they wait a few years and then increase the rate in one chunk rather than gradual increases every year.

If demand ifor rooms is falling or expected to fall you would expect hotels to lower their rates. However the Thai way is to increase rather than decrease the rates in an attempt to keep the same level of revenue as in the past. Of course this just leads to even less demand.

Can see your point, however I don't consider a 25% increase to be gradual! At that rate the price would DOUBLE every 4 years! :hijack :hijack

Doesn't your salary double every 4 years? I have the feeling that the average Thai business owner thinks this way.

Dave,

I met Supaporn and Chris at the airport in Samui a while back and explained the reason I chose not to stay at the Sabai Inn lately was that I considered that the recent price hikes were excessive, especially in high season. There are lots of good alternatives around at the prices they are now quoting.

Useing Thai logic, because the place is dead , down 30% at this time of year, compared to last year. you put prices up, to recoup your losses. Some people say that actual tourism has gone up 7%, Yes , may be but things have changed, more packaged tours from india Korea and Russian, The stay in there hotel , When they come out, they come out in a herd, like cattle. then back to the hotel in a herd. they don't spend money in bars or take a bar girl . So yes on paper tourism has gone up . Thats why the girls have attitude now and a lot of street sellers are getting aggressive , They are hungry. And with the bias of the police and Blatant discrimination of falang , i.e one price for Thais ans one price for falang,May be time to look for pastures new..

Speaking of logic, I can't understand how some punters will fly nearly halfway around the world and then limit themselves to getting a room between Beach Rd and 2nd Rd. There are many place that have sprung up recently outside of this area and as long as your just a short walk to the baht bus route the difference in time of getting from your room to another point in Pattaya is just 5-10 minutes and in some cases less. If I owned the Sabai Lodge and had high demand for my rooms I'd also keep the prices up.

The bottom line is that you can whine about the high prices or you can do something about it and stay elsewhere.

Okay we are starting to get some explanations about the weirdness of the finance threads.

A 25% increase per year means doubling in about three years. Starting at 1,000 baht, your room after four years would cost 2,441 baht, not 2,000. (After three years it would be 47 baht short of doubling.)

The locals pull that same crap in Hawaii. One price for them and higher for tourists. :clap2

A trivial point but the price has gone up from 1000 to 1200 baht. That is a 20% increase - not a 25% increase.

Also, when was the last time they had a price increase. If it was something like 5 years ago then a 20% increase is understandable to some degree. I don't think they are increasing their prices by 20 or 25% EVERY year.

That's exactly what I said about 7 posts earlier.

I'm glad you agree with me

TAT has a meeting in Pattaya and said all the big hotels should raise their rates because neighbouring countries were more expensive. The Skytop photocopied it and put it on the wall in all the rooms

Excellent point Emil,I have never understood how some people feel the neccessity for Seaview accomodation, when just 5 minutes walk away an abundance of equally attractive accomodation exists for half the price or less if staying a couple of weeks or more!

My digs of the past 3 years suddenly out of the blue increased their rate (even to loyal patrons) by 60% with no explanation, apart from sheer greed!

So I simply changed to an almost identical lodging, for my Oct trip, for a price same as I paid in May! Just shop around especially out of the so called high/peak seasons! <huh :clap1

My first trip to Pattaya was in Aug 01. The FLB board had a different format back then and didn't have the hotel info like it does today so I booked a room at the Pattaya Center hotel on Soi 12 by doing a search on Pattaya City at a cost of 800 baht. Every trip thereafter (sometime I would stay at the same location for 3 or 4 trips) I kept finding cheaper places that where also better just by walking around during the day until I got the price down to 300 baht a day (this was a monthly rate and included my cost for utilities). Last year the TGF and I moved to a new location and the cost went up to 400 baht a day (yearly rate), however this was a 1 bedroom and much larger place. The key is look for newly opened places and you'll also have more leverage if your staying for more than a week or two.
