Hi everyone, i am looking for some advice on a laptop. My situation is that i want to purchase my own laptop and be capable of using it for 3 D graphic powerpoint presentations. I am looking to spend alot if i need to and add lots of additional software. I need something very good with graphics. Something with a large memory and something that wont be outdated to quickly. Any advice would be appreciated, Thanks

Do hands on. Get 4GB of memory minimum. Get 500BG disk minimum. But go hands on and get a machine that "feels nice".

Unfortunately, all tech is outdated quickly, heh. The week after you buy, a new one WILL be available and your's will be 10 per cent discounted. Don't sweat that. Get something you can use NOW.

Get the salesman to show you a heavy-duty graphics program actually working on the actual machine, at LEAST Photoshop.

Figure... oh, maybe 45,000 and up.

mick,

There is a geezer on craigslist doing a macbook pro at 30k baht that might be worth a look/price of a phone call.

MAC BOOK PRO, 15', 2.16 GHZ, 2.5 RAM, 250 HDD, SUPERDIVE, AIRPORT, FIREWIRE, USB, ALL SOFTWARE INCLUDED. PLEASE CALL: 0841257072

Whatever you do, I'd be careful about the warranty - make sure it's international and not just local. It could be worth a quick trip to either KL or Singapore where the kit will probably be cheaper anyway.

Nice looking machine at that price!! Worth a note that 2GB of memory on that Mac is probably worth 4GB or more on Windows.

Only problem, assuming the machine itself is excellent, might be the hard drive, 250GB not all that big for graphics guys. You can always store stuff on an external with a firewire (mmmm, Firewire is Good) but I wouldn't want to have to work on it.

If money aint an issue you can get decent Dell lappies, ive got a latitude 6400 running quad core CPU (QX9300), 17" WUXGA screen (1920 x 1200), Nvidia FX3700m Graphics card, 16gb DDR3 ram, 320gb+500gb Hard drives etc, cost was up around the 6k mark (USD), its used for 3d CAD work and is very very capable.

After having used PCs (IBM clones) for well over 20 years I never thought I would say this, but if you are one of those who doesn't want to know anything more about his computer than necessary, buy a MacBook Pro.

The operating system is Unix based. The core reports itself as "Darwin" a variation of BSD, which is similar to and a cousin of, so to speak, Linux. It is stable, not as subject to viruses and malware, and the Mac has always been known as the preferred machine for graphic artists and multimedia professionals.

Macs are more expensive, but they are extremely well made and will last longer than a PC before becoming obsolete and/or worn out.

The new version of OS X, Snow Leopard, is quite impressive and now completely 64 bit which means, among other things, it can address 4 gigs or more of RAM.

If your are going down the PC route and can wait, the release of the new windows operating system Windows 7 is due on 22nd October. Maybe just a point to consider.

Quite right, but any neato PC like the OP wants, it will be a free Windows upgrade in October anyhow.

edit I guess I should say, since bigmick is in Thailand, it'll be a free upgrade if he gets an actual genuine Vista in the first place. Otherwise, the upgrade will cost him 150 baht.

Interesting, do you have a link i can look at, i have a genuine copy of vista, unopened never installed and im currently running a dodgy copy of Win7, if i can upgrade for free to a legit copy that would be splendid.

I looked Here, http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy/offers/upgrade.aspx but they are not listing Thailand in the drop down country menu.

I would look at a Dell mate. Excellent laptops to be had in the mid to high end selection and their waranty is excellent. I have recently purchased a studio 1555 and its very impressive. On the Dell website you can customise your build. I went with a P8600 (DualCore 2.4ghz) cpu with 4gb ddr2 800 ram and upgraded the screen to a 1080p WLED (1900x1080). Pictures ect look awsome on the screen. I got a couple of 9cell dell batteries for the laptop and get about 5hrs/battery if im not doing anything too intensive. The studio range also comes with an Ati 4570 graphics card which has enough grunt to play most of the latest games. The laptop cost me about $1600 AU thats with everything listed above and also bluetooth, wireless, built in 2mp webcam, backlit keyboard, 3 years waranty, Vista 64bit (with free upgrade to Win7), Office 2007 home and student, 15mths McAfee(crap and dont use it) and a laptop backback. With Dell it pays to look around on the net for Dell Coupons. I was able to use one that gave me 15% off and there was a sale with $100 off the laptop with office, antivirus and laptop bag free.

Thankyou everyone for some great advice. I will be back in LOS at the end of this month. I will take on board what Joe K says and go look and find one that "feels good" My job as of now is of high importance and i need to be able to show 3 D images and landscape details in 3D. I need a few days in Bankok for some other buisness so while im there i will look at the Macs and also research the Dells. I will make sure i get a full demo of the laptop and its software. I already expect to be paying something like 50k (baht) + for what i need. I may be going to work for a competitor so this new toy will be of even greater importance for me. Thankyou all for your help. Michael
