Help needed with Guesthouse Wifi

Recommended Posts

Thi is the third time in different guesthouses. You can sign onto the wifi and it will even tell you a good signal strength and speed, but it wont work. The GH owner in PP fixed my com settings for me, but its fucked again. Hedid something that set the computer to find the ISP automatically. Any ideas. Thanks.

Try right clicking on the wireless network connection icon (normally at the bottom right of the laptop) and choose 'repair' and the laptop will carry out an automatic repair of the isp connection.

What he probably did was set the TCP/IP protocol to "automatically obtain IP address". To do that in XP:

- Open the "network connections" page. Can be done either from the control panel or by right-clicking the network icon in the system tray.

- Find the wireless network connection on the list, right click it, and select "options" from the drop-down menu that appears.

- In the box labeled "This connection uses the following items", find the item called "Internet protocol (TCP/IP)", and double-click it.

- A window will appear that is called "Internet protocol (TCP/IP) Properties". Click the "General" tab, and select the radio button labeled "Obtain an IP address automatically".

- Click "OK" until you have exited everything.

That should do the trick. If it doesn't, "repair" the connection as suggested above and try again. If all else fails, fetch the guy who fixed it back and have him fix it again.

Good seeing you the other night BTW.

If you are running XP, above post should cure it.

If you have Vista, let us know and I will see if I can detail that.

jacko,

I have had the same problem with 'Vista'. First time in Pattaya. I told the hotel owner that I didn't have a problem the last time I stayed. His first question he asked, did I have 'Vista'. He said that he could reset the settings and that in the past when a hotel guest had trouble, it was always "Vista'. He said something about the security in the 'Vista' operating system that wouldn't allow me to connect on this trip. To me this didn't make since, because how could I get on the hotel WiFi every day on my past trip.

Anyway, he reset the settings and then I could log into the hotel WiFi. He also told me to have him reset back to how it was, otherwise I wouldn't be able to get back online at the airport lounges on my way back home.

Next time this happened to me, was in a Angeles City hotel that I had stayed the previous trip. Again, samething, the manager reset the settings and then I could get back on line there. My connection this time was both WiFi in the restaurant and being hardwired in the room. Again he reset my laptop so I would be able to use it at other places.

I don't have the connection problem at other places that I have used the laptop over and over, such as at my home, or using the same airport lounges over and over again.

If you know how to solve the problem, that would be a great help.

Thanks,

LeoTex

I can only imagine it is a similar problem as per XP in IP allocation. Wireless networks normally the router should be responsible for assigning IP address. Vista doesn't make things easy but perhaps the following route will help.

Right-Click on your wireless icon in notoification area and select Network and Sharing Centre

In that window on the left select the Manage Wireless Networks

At the top of that window, take the Adaptor Properties

(also accessed via Control-Panel, Network and Internet, Network and Sharing Centre, Manage Wireless Networks, Adaptor Properties)

Under the Networking Tab... normally everything is ticked in here...

You can select the 'Internet Protocol Version 4' and 'Properties'

Normally Obtain IP address and DNS address are automatic.

Similar options are available under IPV 6.

I get a bit confused here but all my settings are automatic and it seems to work most places. If you have a home wireless network whereby your computer normally controls IP addresses it will conflict. You likely know more than me or perhaps can figure it out from here!

jacko,

Thanks for the reply. I printed this out and put in my laptop bag and will give it a try the next time I can't get online while travelng.

Like I said, I only have the problem after using a WiFi spot and come back at a late date and try to log in again.

Thanks again for the info

So typical of Microlimp to hide an important function under 23,087 layers of icons, menus, and other hoops to jump through.

Good to see you too. :beer
Cheers. How much longer are you around for?

You might have to repair the connection to get the IP address to be assigned. Also, you can check if you're acquiring an IP address:

- Right-click the wireless network icon in the task bar (BTW, make sure that your radio is on, and check that there is not a red "X" next to the icon).

- Select "Status"

- On the window labeled "Local area connection status" click the "Support" tab.

It should say something to the effect "Address assigned by DHCP". Compare the assigned IP address with the IP address of the default gateway. They should look similar, most likely the first three fields will be the same. If this is not the case then your computer did not have an address assigned by the network.

To attempt to force this to happen, you can repair the connection (right-click the connection icon and select "repair") or:

- Click the "Start" button.

- Select "Run..."

- In the field marked "Open:" type "command" and press <Enter>. This will open a command (DOS) window.

- At the DOS prompt, type "ipconfig /renew" (without the quotes) and press <Enter>

That should renew the IP address. Again, if all else fails, get the guy back who got it working last time. Being a lazy cunt, this is what I would recommend! <laugh

Then one or the other end of the DHCP is not working. You should ask the tech guy where you're staying to check things out. Good luck.

Thanks.

I bet you think I had to google DHCP to find out what it means :thumbup :D

We have wifi at Canterbury Tales Cafe and sometimes guests have a few teething troubles with settings etc, my Pal Martin an IT pro fixes them in a few mins, if you want I can put you in touch with him.

Thanks. Will remember if I have wifi probs again. Whatever the girl done yesterday, seems to have worked, thankfully.
