HIV % higher in parts of USA than Africa - sobering stats

Recommended Posts

From a Feb 2010 report in The New England Journal of Medicine:

http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/full/NEJMp1000069

Some sobering, current stats:

For example, more than 1 in 30 adults in Washington, D.C., are HIV-infected — a prevalence higher than that reported in Ethiopia, Nigeria, or Rwanda.1 Certain U.S. subpopulations are particularly hard hit. In New York City, 1 in 40 blacks, 1 in 10 men who have sex with men, and 1 in 8 injection-drug users are HIV-infected, as are 1 in 16 black men in Washington, D.C.2 In several U.S. urban areas, the HIV prevalence among men who have sex with men is as high as 30%3 — as compared with a general-population prevalence of 7.8% in Kenya and 16.9% in South Africa.

And a fresh reminder to everyone to play safe...

You must be a little bit paranoid about this. While the source is very good, it is a misleading chart. The chances of a white heterosexual man that does not do drugs is about the same as getting hot by lighting.

OK, you wackos can flame me now!

HIV % higher in parts of USA than Africa

That's because parts of the USA *are* Africa. And Greece and Germany and Lebanon and Thailand. And, as many will point out, Mexico. It's *still* a nation of immigrants and for that reason will sometimes reflect the statistics of that country. Thus relatively high child mortality and various diseases. Just how high depends on the unobjective views of the unemployed academic who got this week's grant and made up the figures and wrote the headline.

That means if you're a black male in some cities in the U.S. who engages in high-risk behavior (unprotected sex, especially with other males; or injects drugs), you have a bigger chance of getting HIV-infected than people in some African countries.

It's hardly a startling conclusion. The key concept here is "high-risk behavior." Avoid it and there is a very small chance of becoming infected with HIV, no matter what your race or where you live.

Well, someone got it, good on you Evil. A classic apples and oranges.

A tiny number of Americans are at greater risk than ALL the people in some African countries. Well, yes. A few people in Africa are richer than Americans. A few Americans speak better Spanish than all Mexican labourers. Some men in Pattaya have sex more often than the average hooker in Las Vegas.

I'm old enough to remember all the threats in the 1980s/90s and the government campaigns which basically told us that we would die from AIDS. later we found out that it was mostly an Arse Injected Death Sentence for poofs. You know, queers and faggots and bum boys etc. And a few druggies thrown in for good measure.

So what ? a disease which kills puffs and druggies ? More of a blessing than a worry you might have thought. Sort of god cleansing the filth up from society, at least that is how the church looked upon it.

So roll on to today, some 20+ years later and I've lived in a number of countries on various continents and at various levels of society including being around hookers and so forth for many years and you know what ? I don't know any single person who has AIDS or ever had AIDS. I also do not know anyone who knows anyone who has or had AIDS. Neither do my friends or people I worked with. We all know people with cancer and we all know Thai girls who have death in their family from all kinds but never from AIDS.

I believe it exists and I believe in part the doctors who tell me that black people can get it easier than white people. Maybe they did get it from fucking monkeys, maybe from eating each other, I don't know. What I do know is that I don't know anyone who knows anyone who knows anyone who has it.

Actually, I bet you do. You'd be surprised - from the tone of the post - to learn how many death certificates in Thailand have TB or cancer or pneumonia or something similar as the cause of death -- truthful in a way, but only after a year or two of DEFICIENCY that made them susceptible to, and killed them from, something you or I would shrug off or beat easily. "Twenty years of openness" about it in Thailand has also been 20 years of agreeing not to talk about it too much.

Of course, I think you'd have to be an idiot to buy into that "anyone is equally likely to get it" malarkey, as you write. That said, lots of people have got it and died or in many cases put on drugs. I bet you know a handful of them. I do.

Well of course you know what I know more than I know of course. Stands to reason

Why on earth would I write that I don't know anyone who knows anyone if I did ?

Many black men are residents of the prison systems. Drug usage is especially high in New York and Washingtion DC. Many drug addicts and needle users. Thats the High-risk behavior. Russian has a similar problem with addicts and their needles. I'd like to know how these numbers were aquired though. cant believe everyone in the USA infected with HIV-aids is on that list.

I wrote very clearly why. You can argue with that, but not if you don't read it. The post was damned clear.

There are an awful lot of people on those "35 tablets a day" regimens. It's possible but statistically unlikely you don't know ONE. If you know no one who has died of pneumonia, TB, something like that, in the past 25 years, it's unusual. I don't know what *you* know, only what's the "general" rule in Thailand.

There was girl I knew that worked at a bar on Beach Road near Pattaya Klang that died with Aids. I found out about a year after I last saw her that she had died. And before anyone asks.... No I didn't.
