Hi,

I'm not the only one who has doubts.

World Cup final: Spain unhappy with appointment of Howard Webb

Howard Webb's appointment as World Cup final referee has caused consternation in Spain in the wake of the English official's performance in their opening match against Switzerland.

"Bad news - Webb will referee the final," was the damning verdict of daily sports newspaper Marca, while another, AS, described the appointment as "debatable" because he had "made two mistakes" which cost Spain during the 1-0 defeat by the Swiss.

Marca claimed Webb had not given an obvious penalty in favour of David Silva and allowed the winning goal to stand which they believed was offside. His officiating would bring back "bad memories for La Roja", grumbled the Barcelona-based Mundo Deportivo.

Why is this bad news? :clueless

The Germans just won an entertaining game against Uruguay 3:2. Forlan hit the cross bar with a powerful shot in the last second of the match. Joachim Löw deserves all the admiration for fielding a youth team against a surprisingly strong Uruguay. Both sides deserved to win, but it was good to see a preview of the German team for Euro 2012 and the next World cup. I was pleased when Kießling and Tony Kroos from Bayer Leverkusen came on as substitutes as well. They are exciting players. I think Ballack and Podolski will find it hard to get back into the team. Friedrich, a great defender is an old man at age 31 and this will most likely have been his last game at the highest level.

Tom, if you read this, don't t worry about Paul the octopus having picked the winner of the last 7 games the Germans were involved in. Paul lives in his tank in a zoo in Oberhausen and only has a good understanding what is happening within the German team. He picked Spain to win the final, but this time it was only a guess. Paul works for the German team and the zoo only. In my opinion he should be banned to make any further predictions. Paul affects the overall morale of the German team, when they have to play games, where they know in advance that they cannot win. Der Deutsche Fußballß-Bund should ban the octopus for all future German games. Punters will loose a lot of money, when Paul starts to make wrong predictions. The only winners are the Oberhausen zoo, where they now have 10 times as many visitors than what they usually get.

Now I can go back to concentrate on the Tour de France. I hope this will be Australia's and Cadel Evans year. We have a great record when it comes to road cycling and track cycling in the velodromes. :banghead

Hi,

Well the big day has arrived. I'm hoping for a good game and I'm not really bothered which team wins. If Holland win I hope they play nice football and MvB isin't allowed to kick people with impunity as he has so far. Howard Webb is a worry in that respect as he allowed Swiss to kick Spain off the park. I think Holland have some great players but players like MvB, vBronkhurst,vdWeil, and Matjisen are not World class IMO. I think they will be shown as such tonight. Hope everybody enjoys the game and may the best team win.

I'm surprised England haven't offered him 10m or so to become their next manager. :allright

0:0 in an evenly matched first half. Neither team looked like scoring so far. 5 yellow cards were given by Webb. De Jong was lucky not to get a red card, when he kicked Alonso into the chest with a karate kick.

Villa missed the biggest chance in the 70. minute. It will suit me, if the match goes into extra time. It is just past 3 AM and I have to catch a mini-bus at 6 AM for my 3-monthly visa run.

Extra time, with Holland leading 6:3 in the yellow card count. Is this a record for a World cup final? The two teams have canceled each others skills out so far.

A red card for Heitinga and Holland has to survive now for another few minutes and show the better nerves in the penalty shoot-out.
