Does anyone here use OpenOffice?

Excel uses a different Macro language to the Open office version so a lot of automated calculations will not work properly if at all. For simple stuff it will work fine.

Another alternative is Google docs if you don't mind all your stuff being stored on line. Has the advantage that all your documents are available where ever you are Home, at the Office or Thailand

I'm not a fan of Microsoft and their charges but you cannot beat MS Office I currently have Office 2010 and it's the fastest most stable office suite I've ever seen.

Office 2007 the one before is freely available on Torrents why get a free piece of crap when you can get fully functional MS Office for free?

It does ok for simple stuff but a lot of documents created on M$ Office will not display properly in OO. And as has been mentioned macros in M$ Office docs will not run. Still, for the price it's a good deal.

I uses it for a while a couple of years back, but found some difficulties in converting to Word files when sending docs via email and some people were not able to open them. I now use Microsoft Office, which is obviously superior.

Although I have a legit copy, it is quite easy to obtain via something like Vuze or other torrents. The only difference being that you need to turn off updates and it is not a legal copy.

I need to used spreadsheets and WP generated docs all the time for working and everything needs to be professionally compatible. If it were just for home use, then I would use Works or Open Office, I guess, but not professionally.

I guess that the point I am making, is that most companies use Microsoft Office, as well as other professional database packages and install them on a group licence, where as Open Office is probably quite useable for banging out a few letters, home accounts and address book etc and the real onus is that its absloutely FREE.

I use it at times and it's pretty good. It will get the job done if you just need to open files that you could not otherwise view or do the occasional project.

However, if you use office to produce things often that pay the rent then if might be worth the money to get the real deal.

Google Documents is probably better for simply viewing files since you don't have to do anything but have a Gmail account.

The only reason I downloaded Open Office was to access the docs I had D/L from the Hull Consulate in order to print the Visa docs out.

It does the job without the unnecessary extras offered from MS Word.

I updated to OpenOffice.org 3.2.1 and it seems quite a bit faster. A big Oracle trademark is prominently displayed on this latest version. I have been using Open Office for several years and have not had any problems or complaints other than I thought it was a little slow.

This is neither a good nor economical reason to get Open Office. Get the much smaller and dedicated Word Viewer from Microsoft for free. It lets you see and print Word documents. Of course so does Wordpad half the time.

Microsoft gives it away. You can get it here.

If you really don't trust them, get it here.

Thanks JK for the link to Word Viewer, another good option for MS Word compatible Docs,

I have D/Loaded & will be using more in future.
