Just what you guys have been dreaming of. .......................Start your own pig farm in the land of smiles!!!!!

I know this is a magnet for bad jokes from "they can't be as bad as Denny's barfines" to " can I change my Skyslop booking to your pig sty enclosure" :devil

Seriously though. Anyone heard of this? I am always suspicious of anything that the person could do alone. If you had a money spinner, why let others in?

What's your thoughts?

It actually doesnt too bad at all. These type of investments can indeed enable you to live well off in Thailand same as when you have a couple of rubber tree plantations.

I'd ask for a brochure and would have a good look around and chat with some of the people that have already invested in it before even considering to get involved though.

Seriously?

Actually Thai pig farms, many in Chon Buri province up the road and east of Pattaya, mostly in Phanat Nikhom district, are amazingly clean - spotless. I haven't seen one that one person could handle, though.

They are profitable. Last I looked, some years ago, Phanat Nikhom had the highest per-capita earnings in Thailand -- i.e. the richest district per-resident in the country, almost entirely because of the pork.

Of course there are pigs everywhere, but the other major pig-rearing area is east of Bangkok, Nakhon Pathom province.

i always thought a good butcher could make a living making British sausages for the breakfasts, as those Frankfurters just dont hit the spot, i think the pig and whistle have a butchery making there own ( not 100% sure as i read it in passing )

Really? If you want to be a pig farmer, why would you buy a franchise? Go find some land for lease, buy a few oinkers locally and start sloppin' the hogs.

If you are looking for an investment in the pork industry, visit a few of the bigger farms around and talk to folks.

Now if you really want an opportunity, I can sell you a beer bar franchise for cheap! Its local to Pattaya and you can hire all the hottest girls in town to work for you. Even better, you can drink your beer at wholesale prices!!

You'd have to do pigs on a large scale to make a liveable wage, from birth to selling them at 6-8 months old when you factor in food etc. i (the inlaws) were making roughly 2,000 baht a pig (would sell for 5-6000 baht), i found the most profitable way was having 4 sows and they would have litters of 6-10 piggys if i remember and they were fetching 1000-1500 baht at 6-8 weeks old and had only been feeding on mommys tits during that period so no food costs for them.

A relative of the TGFs used to breed pigs for the plate...

He was always under pressure to quit as they felt so much 'killing' was bad.

For me, I came here to retire, keeping pigs isn't on the agenda.

Thanks BB and JK :devil

I spoke to Lee in FLB one night and he was thinking of pig farming. He had researched it and his numbers sounded good.

This Franchise was emailed to me because I had previously requested info on a couple of UK franchises.

I thought the numbers sounded good at first too, but when i started doing it via the in laws i soon lost interest when the reality was somewhat different, still turned a profit and think the misses was getting 10,000 + baht a month on average for her cut when the pigs were sold, but as i said you'd have to do it on a massive scale to make a farang wage.

I still reckon sheep farming would be worth a punt for someone who knows what they are doing as the price of lamb is extortionate in Thailand, although i am led to believe they do keep some sheep in the South of Thailand i've certainly never seen any 'Thai' lamb for sale.

You might want to check how many Thais are eager to get in line to buy lamb. There is a reason why there's no sheep farmed in Thailand for meat, and why it's all imported. There's not a chance you could make money raising and selling lamb because there's not a chance you could scale the business big enough to sell below the price of the imported stuff. Even if you got a ban on imported lamb, you'd still not make anything with such a minuscule market. It'd be about like selling parkas.

Would depend on how much money you wanted to make for example 4 female pigs just chucking out little piggies and fattening them up if the profit is all yours could make you 15-20k baht a month averaged out over a year and that was just supplying the local village in the main, a medium sized sheep farm would easily be supported by hotels/restaurants in Pattaya/Bangkok if you could provide a regular supply, the main start up costs would obviously be importing X amount of animals and all the shite that would involve which is what makes it a non starter for most people, but i still reckon if someone had the balls to import a flock of sheep it would be a money spinner in time (probably take a few years to break even, but it would have to be for someone wanting a long term hands on project and actually knew about farming sheep), i presume sheep just eat grass so no food costs and obviously you'd have them rooting each other so no need to buy anymore after your initial investment, obviously a few pairs of scissors so the local Somchai can sheer them and earn some extra money from selling the wool so the local Grannies can knit some jumpers for those nasty Thai Winters.

There used to be a guy on Thaivisa years ago who imported some breed of cattle, everyone told him he was stupid at the time and he made a pretty penny supplying his beef as lets be honest Thai beef is shit and their are a lot of people who will pay for quality, so would a sheep farm work, i reckon it would due to there being a gap in the market, but it ain't for me as i know f-all about farming sheep but i'd like to see someone have a go one day.
