Would you live out of a suitcase

Recommended Posts

Hoverin' by my suitcase, tryin' to find a warm place to spend the night Heavy rain fallin', seems I hear your voice callin' "It's all right."

I have met a number of people in Pattaya that literally live out of a suitcase, they spend a month in Pattaya, a month in the Philippinnes and time in Cambodia.

Everything that they need they haul around in their suitcase, they dont own a condo and just rent a fully furnished room for as long as they need.

These people are very mobile and can leave in an instant if they so wish.

They have no commitements or live-in girlfriends.

They're as free as a bird.

Is this the best way to live in Southeast Asia?

Somewhere I read about a business executive that does not maintain a residence, but rather goes from hotel to hotel.

When I'm in Thailand, that's the way I do it. I don't stay there year round, though. A few months here and there. One time for nine months straight. Anyway, it would be an easy thing to do in Asia. Look at all the guest houses that have good rates. Many of the hotels are also affordable. Daily maid service, free wi-fi, utilities paid, etc. You could have worse problems.

This how I live now but it is not consistant and not same same.

My boss may come to tomorrow and say can you go XXXXXX and work there for 1,3,5 weeks? It's easy for me to say yes, no wife, girlfriend or kids.

It makes me a valuable employee, I am shooting for an offshore job which will mean 28 days work, 2 days travelling and 26 days in Pattaya.

I don't think I want a girlfriend, would be hard for them. Work/money number 1 for me at the moment.

edit: drunken spelling mistake

edit: really drunk and not sure if I meant to hit edit. Screen came up, can't remember, now I'm rambling.

If money isn't an issue and your not spending a long duration in one place then nothing wrong with what your suggest. If you are on a budget and spending most of your time in one place then your better off financially either renting or buying a nice sized unit.

It's what I have done since I retired 5 years ago.The longest I've stayed anywhere is just over a year. But I'm heading to Hawaii soon and plan to stay for quite a while.I do return to my sister's home to visit and pick up everything I've ordered while away.

She stores my belongings and depending on where I'm living,I take what I need. All but a year or so have been outside the USA.

The wanderlust is over for a while. If I had to do it over, yes I would.

It most certainly is an option.......and good question.

I think it was once a valid tax avoidance method, the perpetual traveller!

I also know quite a few people who live like this, and would be able to up-and-off if needs arise. Obviously renting.

My work life was like that, dragging 2 heavy bags all over the world and living in little boxes with noisy people bouncing off the corridor walls at 3am!

But I don't call it living.........and I say I because I look for some more comfortable alternative to what I did for many years during a working life.

Another man who tolerated a miserable marriage for 20 years in his semi may well prefer your option.

I can vouch for the freedom of not having children, both the physical and financial!

i divide my time between pattaya and philippines. I rent a permanent studio room in pattaya near carrefour, security, air con, cable, storage for motorbike and close to everything. 7000 baht a month. the rest of the time n PI i just use hotels but because I have the permanent place i can travel very light which makes it so much easier. looking around for a place to rent in philippines but havnt decided where I want to base myself as yet.

I planned that however it did not work so I have taken a lease on a condo in Jomtien, it means I can keep all my garbage there I keep a base in UK but am considering letting it, with lots of people coming to the UK it will be easy enough :)

YOU KNOW THAT

Without a doubt and that includes anywhere in the world.

Humans are nomadic creatures by nature and it is unnatural to settle down and be exploited by everyone from the Tax thieves to the Femocratic divorce courts.

Only the nomad is human and totally free.

I am in almost exactly the same situation except my room is in Markland on Soi 1 and costs a bit more than 7k. The ocean view is worth it (at least for now) but when the 1 year contract is up I will be weighing my options. If I decide to give Indonesia a go -- and I like it -- then I'd be in Thailand only 1/3 of the time. So keeping a permanent room in Pats would be rather silly at that point.

We'll see what the new year brings, but I do enjoy being a bit of a nomad (hey, it's my name spelled backward!). If I give up the room in Pats then I'll leave my excess belongings in a friend's house after getting rid of the ones I don't truly need. Belongings, that is... not friends! :whistling:

There's plenty of SE Asian world out there to explore and in the past I've been guilty of being too Pattaya-centric with my tastes. The PI is great fun (although the infrastructure is fairly shit) although I have not yet seen a place I would want to rent full-time there as with Markland in Pattaya.
