For the last few nights, the police have been closing bars, discos and gogos on WS during the 2am-3am time period.

Tonight we had a party at FLB, and it was arranged that the dance contest would finish earlier than 2am -- it did, at 1:15am. The band played till 2am and then about 10 minutes later, the police came by and said it was time to close.

I left FLB about 2:30am, and saw that every indoor business (IBar, Insomnia, Gogos) were closed, but the open beer bars were still serving customers (as usual), but it was quiet with no music.

Massive numbers of gogos dancers and staff were hitting the road about that time, and with no disco to go to, it was looking like JP Bar was going to fill up really fast.

Amazingly, even Marine 2 was closed, and they are usually exempt from the main WS closures.

I haven't heard that this affects any other areas besides WS, and was told that the closures were an attempt to rein in the late night openings at 8 businesses, Mixx, Lucifers, Torus, Insomnia, Ibar, Candyshop, Marine 1 and apparently Marine 2.

Another slant on this I heard was that, since Bangkok businesses are closing at 2am, the law should apply equally to Pattaya.

Whatever the reason, it was a strange night tonight.

Yes, this argument has been going for a long time, and one of the possible reasons for the Pattaya "crackdown" is, indeed, that the abstinence groups have cranked up the police to "enforce the law". I don't know that at all -- but it's sure possible. In truth, there is supposed to be one law everywhere, and in truth Pattaya only gets an exemption, basically, day to day and basically skirting that law.

I'm staying on Soi 6 again for Xmas and all the bars there shut at 1am. I do get a stop on in Spiderwoman bar as I use that as my local for my last few drinks on the way back to the Queen Vic. Last time I was there it was becoming more like Spiderladyboy bar as their number is increasing alarmingly. Maybe I need a new local. :allright

On the occasions I do venture to WS 2am is fine for me, maybe head to Soi Marine for something to eat them bed.

Pah... happens every year or two... and if memory serves me right they normally get it out of the way during the lull prior to peak season.

I am optimistic that the smoking restrictions which are applied more in Bangkok will also be enforced in Pattaya.... but I am not holding my breath. :whistling:

Places like Marine, Insomnia Mixx etc etc are purely late late places and have always managed to reopen within hours of a full scale raid.

The only problem will be for the barowners but if this is the norm, open earlier as the mongers would go out much earlier than normal, beacuse they will get up earlier. The doiwnside is that there will be more drunkards at early evening when its nice for families to have a meal and a stroll before the sleaze comes up from the gutters

That's exactly why I said "again" in the thread title. :whistling:

The bars wouldn't stay open late if there weren't customers who liked to go out late, so it might be a problem for the customers who use them as well.

I've noticed a trend for many people to go out later and later. If this clampdown were to continue, that trend would be reversed.

MM - The Thai discos on 3rd are affected too. I thought it was unusual that Tam Nam Chun (sp) shut down at 3am on Thursday. I saw a police truck outside, and I wondered what that was about since there didn't seem to be any trouble in the area. Then last night, I took a few girls out to a Thai BBQ place in that area, and everything was closed before 4am.

I'm reporting on what has been happening.

Sort of like we all know it rains, but for some reason there are weather reports that tell you it's raining or about to rain again.

Do you have anything to add other than "it's happened in the past"?

For example, can you tell us when the enforcement will stop "this time"?

Can you tell us any other areas that were closed early?

Or are you just upset that you were sitting in your room last night and you got scooped? :D

And, for the rest of you, reliable word is it's going to be an early night tonight as well.

Funny I was in there and got kicked out at 2:30am when the police came. They normally close at 2:30 anyway so you may need to check your watch.

Would agree with your comments MM.Its not the end of the world people will just have to change their drinking habits.Lets face it MM,if more people drank in the afternoon aircon bars like yours would be packed due to the heat

No sign of police action last night that I saw. I was on WS until 5am or so, and everyone stayed open from what I could see.

jacko, pretty much everything has happened before, even as written in the Bible long ago:

(Ecclesiastes 1:9-14 NIV) What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. {10} Is there anything of which one can say, "Look! This is something new"? It was here already, long ago; it was here before our time.

but for some reason, we humans continue to report things that have happened before...murders, rapes, wars, earthquakes, tornados...and even police crackdowns.

I will continue to report on the happenings in town, and if there is something that has never happened before, I hope you'll be the first to post it.
