Hi boyz,

Visa run time coming up again. I don't want to go to Cambo, Lao, Malaysia or Burma which have land borders with Thailand as I'll only get 14 days coming back in. I don't want to hang around waiting for a visa either.

So I'm thinking of going to Bombay for a visa run. Never been to India and I reckon there must be something to see if I stay in the downtown area where they clean the place occasionally.

Any tips? Getting to and from the airport, good places to stay, things to do, people to see?

Also they require a visa and seem to be cagey about how long it will take. Should I apply a month in advance?

Cheers

Sounds like an interesting visa run. I'm looking forward to the report.

I'm reading a book now that takes place in Bombay, "Shantaram". If you ever want a good read, this book is turning out to be one of my favorites.

Unfortunately, it takes place in the 90's, so a few things may have changed! :whistling:

It'll always be Bombay to me

York the good -- just doesn't seem to have the right ring to it. But calling it T-O just seems disrespectful.

I've read that actually. Wonderful book. I've certainly decided that I don't EVER want to see.... (spoiler alert)

I would recommend a visit to the Taj Mahal. Well worth the trip. If not the Taj then a party town in Goa. I found India to be a fascinating country.

That'd be Bytown. The place where the strip clubs in Hull get their customers from.

Nope, that'd be Ebytown, sister to Waterloo.

The Taj is one of those bucket list items. It's well worth it, like the sunrise at Angkor Wat and the Korean DMZ under the right (tense) circs. It's one hell of a long way from Bombay, though - maybe a bit closer to Bangkok, actually. Okay, that's a stretch, but the Taj in Agra is a drive of an hour or so south of Delhi - and a long way from Bombay.

If you ever get a chance to do the Taj, do it. It's like the photos, but spine-tingling better.

Tell me more!

As Joe says, the Taj is one of those places you want to visit at least once in your life, in a word, fantastic, but you won`t do it from Mumbai

without a long trip.

I got a flight from Mumbai to Delhi, hired a car and driver and did Agra for the Taj, Jaipur for the Amber Fort and Back to Delhi, overnighting twice in each city before flying down to Goa.

If you do go to India, the visa can be obtained from their High Commission ( in UK that is ) in about 3 days but that requires two visits, by post they used to quote 2 weeks when I got mine.

Is it worth the hassle? without a doubt.

I thought you got longer if you fly?

Bombay - Don't do it! Make sure you take antibiotics for food poisoning and have all your jags up to date. There's a lot of bomings there, is there not?

If I had to do a visa run by air I would do Penang, Singapore, Bali, Japan, Korea, Philippines, anyplace but India.

Japan and Korea are shit and expensive. Singapore is not what it used to be, compared to the old Bugis Street days and Penang has become a lot more expensive as well, with half the fun. The Philippines, like Thailand, has changed a lot less over the last 30 years and is still a mongers paradise. Try Cebu and countless other places instead of those shit holes Manila and AC. Bali has been my favourite destination and will remain so forever. India consists of hundreds of different regions. Some are hell and others are heaven. It helps to be a younger bloke to discover the more exciting places. :whistling:

Hello Gonzo, has Thrappaya been finished yet...............like hell it has! :thumbup :D

Talking of shit-holes, the OP mentioned the prime one, India.

Generally on my visa runs I have taken the TGF, and that means a different catalogue of requirements.

I will do Bali again next month too.

I am far too old to take on the trials and tribulations and stomach problems of India!
