is it safe to buy food from foodstands in pattaya?

Recommended Posts

Never got sick from a foodcart on the street, I usually relied on my girlfriend to buy it. I was out with a mate one afternoon in an outdoor bar and was leery about ordering from a cart nearby. He lives here and told me that it was safe as it was busy. The one time I got really sick was a packaged meal from the market there across from Wonderful 1 bar, it has pretty much all western food. I think it was beef stew.

:gone

To me this thread looks like the pinnacle of stupidity. ^_^

I could start a few more threads, but ain't gonna do it, but 2 give U a few examples:

Q: Is it safe to step into the shower:

A: No it's not, because you can easily slip over, and break your neck.

Q: Is it safe to eat something?

A: No, because you can easily choke on everything that you shove into your gob.

Q: Is it safe to walk on the streets?

A: No, because some lunatic might run you over, and if that doesn't happen, the earth might collapse under your feet.

Q: Is it safe to fly to Thailand?

A: Yes, because flying still is the safest way of travelling.

Q: Is it safe to be alive?

A: No, because before you know it, you're dead, and there's fuck all you can do about it, it's all a matter of fate, and fate is something we can't control. :chogdee

All things considered, I think eating from foodcarts can give you a heavy dose of the shits, and food poisoning to boot, but there are worse things in life. :gone

Go fuck yourself, douchebag.
No, I don't think I will do that.

The film was a Bond movie, perhaps Diamonds are Forever. , just maybe Goldfinger though.

Over the last twelve years I have often eaten from the carts and never had a digestive problem apart from one time when I bought some large steamed prawns. Friends of mine have twice required hospital treatment after having dined in those fancy seafood restaurants in Walking St. I have had diarrhea and upset stomachs a few times after eating falang food from cafes and restaurants but never Thai food.

The food I have purchased from the food stalls has never given me any trouble probably because they have been fairly busy, I suppose they have a fast turnover of stock and their food has not had the time required to go off.

Disregarding one particular contentious asshole, the consensus seems to be falang food can sometimes be a problem in Thailand, Thai food from a busy cart is usually fine.

Having said that I do eat BBQ chicken from the carts when drunk without ill effects so far, but the kebabs always gives the runs.

I have had food poisoning but never from a street vendor. The last two times were both from farang run restaurants. Look for the busy stands and you should be fine.

Choose busy food carts, I've never gotten sick from a cart. I did get sick twice, once after a falang brekkie at the old Thumbs Up on soi 6.

Anything CAN happen in life.

The only sure thing is you're gonna die, sooner or later. Might as well get on with enjoying things.

However, you can cut down the chances of getting negative reactions to the different bacteria you'll come across by eating a bio/live yogurt every day for a week or two prior to your trip. Keep that topped-up by drinking a small bottle of Yakult on a daily basis whilst you're in Thailand - they're available in every 7-11 in all sorts of flavours/sizes.

Live bacteria yogurt (or pills) will help keep intestinal flora intact, most often a problem from taking antibiotics and killing off beneficial bacteria that aid in digestion, and so it cannot hurt and it probably pretty good for you. I travel with Acidopholus tablets, same idea.

Bacteria of one kind however does not kill other bacteria, or make you immune to pathogens so don't expect to prevent salmonella or E.Coli infection from tainted food with yogurt. If you get ill with a pathogenic bacteria you will need either a lot of time and fluids and electrolytes are more wisely an antibiotic such as ciprofloxacin for E.Coli or Salmonella. It is a pretty good idea to travel with 5 days / 10 X 500 mg tablets (2 a day) from your GP. See a doctor for the trots for more than 24-26 hours.

Actually, my reply to you was "Like I said, the only time I got sick was eating falang food. Is that difficult to understand?", which apparently was difficult for you to understand, because you persist.... It wasn't until you said "You remind me off the idiot..." that I put you in your place.

Do you really think lying about what you did here is helping?

So the only time you ever got sick was eating falang food.... yes it is difficult for me to understand. What that has to do with 'Is it safe to buy food from food stands'.. because it has nothing to do with the OP's question? And your idea of putting someone in their place is ' Go fuck yourself, douchebag.'.. oh wow, such wit! Guess you got me there. (Steve Martin, Roxanne?) Edited by jacko

But it has everything to do with "It is my first trip to Thailand and am wondering if it is safe to buy food from foodstands in pattaya? Or, is it safer to go to a restauarant with seating in it?", which was what the OP asked. :clap2

Try to stick to the OP's questions. Yes, they sell farang food in sit-down restaurants, and it's a matter of opinion as to whether they are any safer than eating from the foodcarts.

Generally you have about 4 hours where food like meats can stay unrefrigerated and still be safe to eat. I personally would avoid street vendors unless you have been eating their on a regular bases. Generally if they keep the meats iced down properly, while waiting to be cooked, it will stay safe for a longer period of time. Look at the operation carefully :

A. Do they wash their hands other than wiping their hands on a dirty towel?

B. Are they handling the raw meats with their unwashed hands?

C. Does the meat looks crusty like it’s been sitting out for awhile?

If so I would pass on that food cart just to be safe. Your trip is too short to be spending it on the toilet.

Unfortunately you can have same problem with any restaurant you go to as well. I would pick a popular restaurant that is clean in appearance that will give you at least and ideal of how they run the operation.

Seems impossible to eat there on a regular basis if you avoid them unless you eat there on a regular basis.

Joe, You have a point I miss wrote the phrase, my writing skills are not up to the standard of most BM .

I personally do not eat from food carts very often, so like you said I would not have a food cart to eat from on a regular bases.

But hopefully you got the jest of what I had to say as a whole. Thanks for your comment !
