OK, after something like 25 plus years toing and froing to Thailand, and the Far East in general, i finally decided last year (or was it the year before?) to make a move on a permanent (well, as permanent as can be in Thailand) move out to Thailand.

Plan is to setlle about 30 minutes drive East of Pattaya (To me, Pattaya is OK for a week or two, but then the cracks start to show and i get itchy feet)

The one thing that concerns me is the lack of a phoneline availible in my chosen abode/village, and, therefore lack of internet. TOT DID put in 100 lines a while back, but were all snapped up, and their plans aren't to put any more in anytime soon.

So it looks like i will have to turn to some other method to get "webbed up"

Anyone know what alternatives there are? I know there are some "dongles" that allow basic usage, but with pitiful speeds

All info gratefully recieved

Malc

Unless one of the cable companies has a line in there, your options are nil, other then over the air by AIS/DTAC.

Even satellite requires that you have a phone line (or other internet connection) to work.

I suggest you choose a new village, if possible. Pick where you want to live based on your needs... if you can that is.

Don't know how remote your location is, but you could always check if there's someone with an internet connection in the vicinity, who would be willing to share his connection via Wifi. :chogdee

You got the solutions above... my TGF came back from her village raving about the ADSL speed her friend had out in the boonies, obviously a telephone line required.

You may have to put up with the 'dongles'....yes the speed on 'Edge' or whatever you get is slow, but sometimes out in the villages, where usage is less, it can surprise you. I was swinging in a hammock quite content with the sluggish speed... as you turn native the internet may become less important to you. Plus, you can take this with you wherever you go.

When you get there, check around if a neaby neighbour has internet, a trip to Pattaya and return with a wireless modem/router for 2k and gift it to them along with a few beers every week for your access.

3G may well arrive soon, perhaps on a truck right now waiting for Thrappaya and Jomtiem 2nd Rd to be completed!

Yep EDGE seems your only option at the moment but it IS possible to get used to it...I switch on, open my hotmail...go for a shower ..come back and it is ready to use...

I'm not sure where you heard or read this, but it's false.

I just finished a job where we installed satellite internet that was up to 1.5 Mbps & where there was NO phones neither land line nor mobile

The systems I've seen in LOS usually start about 384 kpbs D/L & about 44 kbps U/L & of course you can get better systems the more you pay

The cheaper faster option option is en Edge card/dongle or straight off the mobile, if you can go with a unilimited data plan

CAT was working on a system to provide decent speeds for upcountry :

http://www.cattelecom.com/site/en/list_service.php?cat=568

looks like it can get up to 3.1 Mbps depending on your location

I'd go to the local seller of these units & see what their speed is like

if it's better than 153 Kbps then it's worth buying, but anything less is the same as you'll get on Edge with AIS or DTAC

then again, there's the cost consideration, which I'm not sure what CAT charges

I think it was 1k Baht for unilmited access on their EV-DO (3G for CDMA) system

is anyone out there on Hutch or CAT's CDMA EV-DO service ?

they're calling it 3G, but it's the version for CDMA

My neighbour has a Hutch dongle as a back-up to his ADSL.

It works but appears slow to him ... I also believe it is only available in selected areas of Thailand.

I think it is overpriced.

CDMA EVDO was split between CAT and Hutch. Hutch had the central part of the country and CAT had the rest of the country. Hutch decided to sell out and CAT was the logical and most practical buyer. Who ended up buying Hutch? True of all companies. I had thought CAT would jump on that deal so they could cover the entire country. I have no idea of what is happening now. I use CAT EVDO upcountry and can tell you that the dongle modem WON'T work in Cha Am or Jomtien.

I tried an EV-DO dongle at Hutch in Laam Tong Rayong & it was getting the same speeds as my AIS Edge connection, so I didn't bother changing.
