Re: if sending money to los why not cheques

Recommended Posts

Never heard of anyone sending cheques before....

Not sure if a Thai bank would accept a UK banks cheque.

The best and cheapest way is as others have said on your other post....set up a uk bank account in your name, send her the Card using UPS or any other decent international courier........Then call her with the pin.

I wouldn't send anything of vaule through 'normal'  postal services.

Thai Banks will accept a Sterling cheque to be paid into an account, BUT

They will take a lifetime to clear it and will also charge you an extortionate amount for the pleasure of doing so.

I've sent cash 3 or 4 times inside a card and it has always got there, but that is to an address up country. Maybe the Thai Postman Pat looks out for mail to Pattaya with fe-mail (get it?) names. GF gets better rate of exchange too. But I wouldn't chance any more than fifty quid that way. :(

Sending a cheque is a good way to toss money away. To clear the cheque it will go through several sets of hands between the Thai bank and your bank and each hand will cream some off the top. Your 50 quid cheque could end up being 10 quid by the time it gets into the intended hands. And it takes forever.

Jack, it not just in LOS. Sent a cheque once to a mate in France and 500 Francs turned magically into about 300. Its just banks is all.

Jack,

The basic problem is that the Thai bank doesn't know whether or not your bank will pay the cheque. The process of clearing cheques on an international scale takes weeks, if not longer.

I worked for a bank for many years until the bastards outsourced my office to a firm of accountants but it is over 25 years since I worked in branch banking. The basic procedure is that the branch of the Thai Bank sends the cheque to its Head Office. Their Head Office may not have an agreemement with a UK bank so they then send it to another Thai bank that does. That bank then sends the cheque to the bank with which they do business in the UK. (not necessarily your bank). That bank then sends the cheque on to your bank's Head Office who then forward it on to your own branch to ascertain whether or not it can be paid. (In reality this will now be an administration office somewhere far removed from your branch).

Your branch then agrees that the cheque can be paid and sends the funds to its Head Office and the whole procedure is repeated in reverse. Of course, everyone in the chain takes some commission from the transaction.

Therefore not a good way of doing business. It may be possible to obtain from your bank a draft in Thai baht drawn on a bank in Thailand but there will almost certainly be delays in Thailand before the recipient will get the money.

Hope this helps.

Alan

PS - If anyone working in International Banking wants to correct anything I've said, please do as my information is very much out of date.  ;D ;D ;D

;D

You try to cash a Thai Bank cheque made out in Baht at the Nat West into ones private account, and see how much they will rip you off ! As has been stated, it ain't just the Thai banks, it's ALL of them.

BK & H ,

Take care with giving a girl  an atm card . I just applied for a second Nationwide card . Separate account and was told there would be no overdraft limit.

The reason for this was that I'm looking at having someone buy goods for me in Los and send via airfreight for me to sell in England.I know a Thai I resonably trust but just wanted to transfer the exact amount for buying the goods and then the split of the profit once I'd sold them .

Anyway I did a trial run in the UK and even though I specifically requested no o/d facility thay allowed me to go 1000 gbp overdrawn .This a fraction of my normal account's o/d limit but I got that far and didn't try any further.

When I queried this with the bank manager I was told that this unauthorised o/d was allowed due to my good credit rating.

The only way they could stop this was to give me a card that was not visa backed . This was pointless as it wouldn't be useable in a Thai atm .

I don't know how large an o/d I could have run up but it would worry me if I gave it to a tg.

Just my personal experience that I thought you should know about.

Banks ! I 'ate 'em.

My entire earnings for the last 26 years went through my account, a few bob I can tell you, but they still charge you for going o/d past your allowance about 20GBP A DAY! All it needs is you to fone to increase o/d and its all o.k!

Got 27k in an account getting 3% interest or so, lending the same to some poor sod at 14%. Not a bad profit margin.

It still takes as long to clear a cheque, even drawn from same bank as it did 30 years ago. where is that money for the 5 days ?

My student daughter got an account with cash card and 1,000 GBP 0/d at low interest, and she was not even employed - lead us not into temptation !

I worked my arse off for 3 years rather than her owe them a penny, time well spent.

I feel better now.  :(

This is not necessarily the case.  Nationwide's basic card is still usable internationally. I think via Cirrus or Maestro. Still no commissions taken.

I have a similar set up, though I do trust my contact in Thailand.

Understand what you're saying . What the bank told me is that they will allow me to go overdrawn as I have good credit with them on my other accounts.waht they say is it could save me embarrassment  if i get turned down using it .That's great for me but I want a zero o/d regardless. Which they can't do.

Nationwide debit cards are visa , link and delta and I never have trouble using them anywhere abroad.Cirrus and maestro I do not know or have on my cards.

They have stated that they can't do what I want as it's taken over by the computer in my best interests.

Any Ideas??

Jack, MANY banks are global but most are not. Also remember we are peons, not corporations sending millions around the world every day.

Anyway, up to you. Try it and see what happens. I have sent money twice. Once was simply US$20 inside a card for a favour above and beyond by an airline worker. No problem.

The other was more substantial and I used a HSBC bank draft drawn on HSBC Silom Road, BKK. Again no problem but a few hundred baht did vapourize,

AS I said, this card is not VISA backed, but can be used in Thai ATMs. http://www.nationwide.co.uk/banking/curren...n/cash_card.htm

Read what? Did you post something about your empty promises to supply cheap flights?

I don't see your posts unless you jump onto a thread that I am on.

So tell me, what about your 'much trumpeted'(by yourself) travel agency?

Russians tourists? There's not a lot of other nationalities there(Pattaya) other Thai & Asian girls for rent.

I still like the thrill of the chase. It seems that you aren't up to that anymore.

Also they are not expecting me to pay for them.

The last Russian girl I was with insisted on paying for the drinks and wouldn't let me pay for the taxi. The one before covered dinner.

It's up to you if you wish to pay for play, but your ridiculous comments about me being old, when I'm clearly much younger than you and the empty promises about some TRAVEL AGENCY you planned to revive from unconsciousness, takes you further in your quest for imbecility.
