Planned upgrade to FORUM software

Recommended Posts

We've been running on the now unsupported version of the forum software (Invision Power Board 2.3.6) during the initial release stages of their major upgrade to version 3.x.x.

I've been waiting for version 3 to become stable and usable enough to move to it, and it seems that time has arrived.

The new version IPB 3 is a major interface change to the forum software, but once you know how to use it, it has some very nice features for information presentation.

I'll keep you posted as we move forward.

Good move MM, looking forward to some of the improved features this will bring. Good luck with the conversion, hope it goes smoothly without any significant downtime.

Glyn.

Same as the addicts forums and piatnight.

Best feature for me is it remembers where you were up to in a thread.

If you get to page 5 on a 10 page thread, come back tomorrow and it opens on page 5.

It will also, at random, take you to the last post in the thread. Even if it's the first time you have looked at the thread, it's a ten page thread and you click on the 1 in the page count. You will still go to the last post in the thread on page 10. Just like PIatNight & PISecrets. The problem I also have with PIatNight is if I look at the forum on one computer and several days later log in from a different computer, it will tell me there is no "new content". In my opinion, and yes it's just an opinion, the new software sucks donkey balls. Since every forum I follow is switching to it I'll just have to deal with it but it still sucks big ones.

There are simple ways around that. You just click on the strt page and scroll to the bottom and you can click to see all the latest posts, unread and read.

It does not take long to get around using the new software and has many add on advantages. I have been using it regularly for the last few weeks and I now prefer it to the old software. Its like buying a new car, not all of the controls are in the same place, but you can still drive it away, and get used to it after a couple of days.

Getting to the view new posts search page is no problem. Easy peasy. Now go back and try fro comprehension instead of speed. If you click on a thread you will go to the last post in that thread. Even if you have never clicked on that thread in the past. If the thread has ten, twenty, thirty ... whatever pages, you will go to the last post on the last page of the thread. Even if you click in the 1 in the page count you will still go to the last post on the last page. All sarcasm aside, if you know of a setting in preferences that will cure this I'd love to hear it. So far I have not found it, and I have looked several times. When I mention it to Ready he just ignores it and when I mentioned it to T-ric he changed the font size. This falls into the category of annoying. Not enough to abandon the forums, but definitely annoying.

I'm not sure why that is happening for you, but that feature works fine for me.

Me too, perhaps it is his personal settings which give you a choice of how you want to see posts/threads and new content. It doesn't work like that for me,

There are lot more useful personal settings on the new software, a lot more than there currently are here with the older version.

Invision no longer offer support for the current software and it can be a pain in the arse when things go wrong. I was amazed that when PL changed over, it was done in just over an hour and virtually everything in its right place, with a few tweaks needed here and there, and some custom smileys needed re adding. Other than that, it took about a week for members to really get used to it, and now their are very few operational queries from members.

Is this the upgrade that works for cell phones?

It has a mobile interface (skin), yes.

  • 2 weeks later...

MM,does it have the hover feature (my name for it)? That is nice.

The "hover" preview of a topic is now installed. Sadly, it only works with topic view within a forum, not VIEW NEW CONTENT or the results of a SEARCH.

To use it, just move the mouse over the topic title, and a preview box of that topic's first post will pop up.
