Father in Bangkok hospital Pattaya

Recommended Posts

Hi,

my father is in Bangkok hospital Pattaya following an accident on a bike. He has broken ribs and a punctured lung but he is ok.

The problem is I am pretty sure his insurance will not cover him, they are investigating. Meanwhile he is being pressured to pay £3000 now +

£1000 per day going forward, the bill could end up £20,000 and he has no way of covering that. We, his family are in england, my brother is flying from Delhi

to be with him tonight and meanwhile we are trying to scrape some funds together in the event the insurance company does not cover him.

My question is: Is there a more reasonable priced hospital near or in Pattaya where he can be treated while he recovers? He has had the

work needed and he now needs recovery time and monitoring and at £1000 per day I would be expecting him to be coming out of there like

Steve Austin.

Thanks in advance for any help in this matter.

1000 GPB/day? That's near 50K THB/day. Is he in intensive care or on life support?

A room there is less than 10k/day I think (200 GBP)

I've not been hospitalized there, but I have friends who have, and as I recall the private room rates were reasonable...and very nice rooms, btw.

I just checked their website, and it seems they have several offerings for rooms, including the Presidential Suite, the Ambassador Suite, and the Superior Room.

Everyone I know stayed in the Superior Room, which was quite nice...but the Presidential Suite could get expensive.

Here is the link to their room description http://www.pattayaheartcenter.com/en/tmain.php?module=rooms

Sorry to hear about your father. Best of luck and wishing him a fast recovery!

Firstly sorry to hear about your father, now one important fact to remember when dealing with the insurance companies. Most of them state in their policies regarding the riding of m/cycles that it will only cover upto I think 125 cc. In relation to hospitals are you correct in the currency you use £ ? I had to use Pattaya International Hospital on Soi4 last year for emergency room examination and a doctor and two injections of pain killer and then one of antibiotics and two drips plus one overnight room and it was around £400. I had suspect appendicitis but when I cam home later after my holiday the reality was kidney stone.

If he's in ICU, then it's probably going to cost a lot. That's special nursing, equipment, medications, not just a room. I was only giving you expected pricing for an unattended room.

ICU will be much more expensive.

Let's hope he's out of there into a recuperation room (Superior Room) very soon.

Good luck!

ICU is about that, and frankly is an expensive item in any Pattaya hospital. Have a sit down with the consultant concerned and find out the reasons for ICU and the projected stay there (take notes) you can the go speak to the other Patts hospital providers and see if they concur. Think long and hard before you ship him out of Pattaya ICU up the road to Sriracha hospital on financial grounds, I know from personal experience that that equates basically to euthanasia by another name :(.

Hope your father is OK in the long term.

But another reason NOT to hire motorcycles in Thailand you will not be covered by your travel insurance and most people who rent them have little or no road sense. And the Thais on the road well most have never had a driving lesson let alone taken a test so if your stupid enough to take the risk make sure you have the cover, Shame you father didn’t do the paperwork before leaving you and your family with this mess to sort out.

I believe there are two levels of intensive care.

ICU and CCU...

I have seen people in ICU who one would think did not need to be there. ( I am not a doctor, but I play one on TV). Hospitals in LOS are businesses, designed to maximise profit not health. Doctors/ consultants are on commission based remuneration. They also 'nickel and dime' you with lots of small items and unknown charges, except they are more than dimes. People are reticent to argue with doctors, as they are held up as Godlike. BPH has a reputation as being expensive here.

Firstly when your brother arrives, try to tell BPH that you intend to move your father as the costs are excessive, they are frequently agreeable to retain a patient and reduce the charges. If that is not forthcoming, and your father is stable, I would consider moving to Sri Racha, the PHYATHA.

Good luck with the Insurance company, best wishes to your father, and let us know how things work out.

Lovedog made me think of another point.... there may well be a bike renter in the wings looking for compensation for his damaged machine. The rented bikes are generally renter responsible for all damages.

Ask for a discount. Hospital may be willing to negotiate a lower price. It never hurts to ask. I hope your father recovers. Good luck.

Thanks for all your advice, he is now out of ICU in a superior room. His brother who happens to be Mickey Pierce of Only fools and horses is

with him and negotiating. I have paid £2300 so that things will be a little easier for him.

The Consulate are giving some advice. We will probably leave him where he is at the moment and ask for a discount and a payment plan.

Good news is he is out of danger and recovering.

Thank you again

Good to hear I hope his health continues to improve. Oh and yes it just twigged my memory there in realtion to discount. When I was in the hospital it was a bank holiday weekend,so in order to get leaving I had to pay the bill with my cc then claim it back later oterwise I would have had to saty another day or two until the ins offices opened. Anyway the point being was that as I was paying and not the ins co I got a discounted price without asking it was 10%.

I believe there are two levels of intensive care.

ICU and CCU...

.

CCU means Cardiac Care Unit. Not a different level of an ICU vs. a different type of ICU for cardiac patients, and some not all that intensive care actually, like after an angioplasty.

Since he was a trauma patient ICU is where he'd go.

Good to hear that he is out of ICU and making a good recovery. Maybe ye should have got Del Boy to do the negotiations, Ye'd probably end up with the hospital paying ye.

If money is the problem, look for gov hospital far cheaper.

Just because its a gov hospital does not mean worse medical care ,but the rooms will not be as good, also the fod will be thai.

I live in North East Thailand and i know the same doctors can work for gov hospital as well as the private hospital.

So in real terms you are paying the higher chargers for nice rooms ,food ,also note the overheads of a private hospital ,higher

adim staff costs and higher costs for the medicine.

Dont forget private hospitals are to make money ,,so if money is a issue and if not insured maybe look into what i am saying.

I know many falangs use Gov Hospitals where i Live in Khon Kaen and have had no issue with then .

I do also think you can have semi private care in Gov hospital at far cheaper rates.
