Unlocking Cell Phone

Recommended Posts

Unfortunately I don't have an answer but it may help to specify the model.

The buggers in Tukom fucked up my phone (scratched it as well). Apparently, they tried to do some physical messing about when only a code is necessary. I dunno if this works http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php/1727115-Samsung-phones-absolutely-free-general-unlocking-codes but there are lots of hits for unlocking phones you just need to pay for them usually.

Jeez, that is an expensive option.

As said, basic phones can normally be unlocked by the supplier, you request an unlock code.

Removing all the damned branding and options they install is more of a problem, I managed it with a Sony phone but it was a bit of a routine.

They get smarter, I guess it gets harder.

This site worked for me.. However, the waiting time (a little over a week) killed me waiting.. But it worked so I guess I can't really have any complaints.

AndroidUnlock.us

Let me know how it works for you!

Did you buy that $100. 3GS iPhone in the states or LOS?

Curious to know if it was unlocked or locked and if you changed it.

By the time I decided to put mine back on factory settings after having it unlocked for a year or two, i couldn't find it. I wanted to up date it to the latest IOS and then unlock it again.

No such luck now. I hope a hotel maid in Chaing Mai where I probably left it enjoys it as much as I did.

Here in US.There are quite a few available on craigslist and as I mentioned,my carrier will unlock free of charge.Unlocked usually adds roughly ~20% to the value,no matter which model you buy/sell.Far as I know, updating to latest Ios doesn't change lock status. It didn't on mine.

Gary, what do you mean "hacked"? Unlocking has nothing to do with "hacked".People confuse unlock and jailbroken all the time-apples & oranges.

Or Apples and Blackberry on Orange?

I can understand unlocked, freeing up a phone to run on any network, what does 'hacked' entail then?

  • 3 months later...

They are pretty comfortable with Nokias in Asia, aren't they? I have heard the same response to Samsungs before, that they are hard to unlock.

Well, I have a Nokia now, and no time to have it unlocked.

Does anyone have any specific suggestion on who to go to in Tukcom (or elsewhere) to have it unlocked?

On a side note I have a nice Samsung galaxy 9000i s its unlocked (as are all o2 phones) and it definitely works in Asia as I have used it there before. It has been in a case from day one so its scratch free and in as new condition. I will be in Pattaya very very early next month if anyone wants to make me a decent offer for it ? I have now upgraded to an S3.

I think the standard practice in the LOS is to flash a new BIOS on the phone.

To the OP, If your phone is CDMA, it will do no good to unlock it. It's only good for a GSM phone that uses a SIM card.

Does that remove the apps or data?

I had an O2 phone which definitely required unlocking...they sent me a code eventually to do it and charged £15.

Definitely not now and not this past possibly 5yrs Jacko some legal argument and court ruling which ended the locking apart from Orange and three here now (which are different anyway) This one never was touched by anyone and I have it from new from 02.

It was in June 2012 that I requested it's unlocking....and I don't think it was 5 years old.

O2 are still offering 'Free' expensive phones with a contract, like an IPhone5 for £32/month.

This is from their website...

For Pay Monthly and Pay & Go Customers

If you're a Pay Monthly customer then you can request for your handset to be unlocked at any time, free of charge. This policy may vary according to the handset you have purchased.

Don't forget that you'll still need to honour the remainder of the minimum term of your contract even if you place a non-O2 SIM into your phone.

To request for your phone to be unlocked, click here and complete the requested information.

If you're a Pay & Go customer, your O2 mobile can be unlocked 12 months after purchase for a one-off £15 fee which we'll deduct from your airtime balance. This policy may vary according to the handset you have purchased.

Looks like it may not get done.

I went to Tukcom and a stall directed me to another shop. There I was told that it will cost 1500 baht and take a week because they cannot unlock it 'normally'.The handset is one of the Lumia series and apparently cheaper Nokias can be unlocked easily, but not these smart phones.

If anyone has any suggestions I will try it.

In the meantime I may try one of the Internet sites - they promise to send unlock codes from as little as $10.

Just to close this chapter, the phone DID get unlocked, and for much less money, and less pain, than the people at Tukcom quoted. As stated above, they had asked for 1500 baht and a week's time.

Instead, I went to a website called "unlock for cheap". Not a very sophisticated name, and I had some misgivings. But they answered my questions quickly. After I placed the order they sent the unlock code in less than the 12-24 hours they promise.

I tried the code and, abracadabra, it worked first time!.The Lumia happily accepted a Thai SIM.

Cost: US 10, or about 310 baht.
