On my recent Emirates flight from Dubai to Angeles, we flew straight over the province of Hong Kong. I can only presume that because of the typhoon that was hitting Bangledesh and India at the time, we took a detour skirting all the way along the Himalaya mountains, Northern Burma into China, and then turning south near to Sichuan and straight down over Guangdong and Hong Kong and then onto Angeles.

You can get good pics from the cable car on Lantau Island too.

The old Kai Tek airport approach "down main street", had to be the most extreme experience afforded to passengers and pilots alike on a regular basis. To quote a Cathay pilot "Always breath-taking, but totally hair-raising for the first time"! Then of course you could always fall in the drink, if you overshot the landing zone,or didn't hammer the brakes on quick enough!

It is used as a Cruise terminal now.
