Bangkok Hotel Recommendation

Recommended Posts

Advance apologies that this is off-topic (i.e. Bangkok) or if this is in the wrong section (please feel free to move to different section).

Could I get some recommendations for a guest-friendly place to stay in Bangkok near Patpong - reasonable walking distance?

I've decided not to stay at the place I usually stay at as it involves a tuk-tuk ride and I'm fed up trying to negotiate a half-decent price late at night. I'll be in BKK for a few nights before returning to Pattaya early next year.

Thanks for any advice

Sorry, but I wouldn't even go to Patpong these days. I know there are few good hotels very close by, but have found that the best ones for the best prices are around the best area - Sukhumvit.

It would much easier to give you recommendations if we had an idea of the price range you have in mind. Also, anywhere you can take a tuk-tuk you can also go by taxi and taxis are cheap and readily available all times of day or night in Bangkok. So if you have had good experience with a certain hotel, you could stick with it and simply ride a taxi back and forth to Patpong. And you can negotiate the price by email ahead of your arrival.

Thanks Evil, was looking around the 1,000 baht range. Anything much higher I would imagine would not be guest friendly.

My favoured hotel was rather disappointing on my last visit, hence keen to find a replacement.

i know Patpong isn't everyone's idea of a good time, but it has a certain nostalgic feel for me. Been there many times and also aware of the other places to go too

1,000 baht per night doesn't get you much in Bangkok. I have always stayed in the Sukhumvit area, if I have stayed in Bangkok. Try taking a look on the usual websites, eg..........asairooms, agoda etc. 1,000 a night wont get you very much though............especially in high season.

I don't think there's much direct correlation between hotel prices in Bangkok and whether a place is guest friendly. That's not been my experience.

Scroll down for Patpong ...

First ever night in Thailand I stayed at a nice hotel on Silom Road 1,800 per night (Narai Hotel I think) back in the 90's, before the days of Internet advice etc. I asked someone in our Bangkok office to make the arrangement for me, i was there on holiday not business. It was also my first (and thankfully last) experience of the guest fee and I moved out after a couple of nights.

From there I found my favoured hotel and have never stayed anywhere else for holiday in BKK. Guess I'm still wary after all these years. But last visit the computer room was mosquito infested and the stay was really disappointing

The hotel recommendations section here is a good idea, but sadly the last BKK post is dated 2007, but then this is a Pattaya board.

You have my sympathy, however, just because the Narai was a mistake for you, it had nothing to do with the price.

I have stayed in The Nana Hotel and The Dynasty Hotel. Both are guest friendly, but not that close to Patpong. In the same area is the Zenith which is (well at least it was some years ago) more expensive, pretty nice but not guest friendly.

In the same area you can also find the Marriott which is pretty nice, considerably more expensive and guest friendly. Likewise The Landmark, Sheraton and Westin are all in the same general area and are all guest friendly. Then there is The Atlanta. :thumbup

Not really true..... 1000 baht is low-end these days in Bangkok and tourist areas of Thailand, and even high end hotels can be guest friendly.

Patpong is the slight stumbling block, I always stayed around Suk/Nana.-Cowboy area, if I fancied Patpong, I would take a Tuk-tuk ot Taxi.

Try this....there are some Patpong places listed although I cannot recommend them.

Well certainly a lot of possibilities there

And you can always learn something, i.e. a hotel having a guest policy is not necessarily an indication of class

Yes, I often felt a few of the 5 stars didn't have a policy as such, but chose not to hassle their guests.

Likely until they had their first issue maybe. :D

Patpong is right under the BTS so anywhere on the skytrain line will do. 1000 baht is pretty low for Bangkok though.

If you don't have any problem returning to your hotel before the Skytrain shuts down for the night! After that it's taxis who refuse to use their meters and charge whatever they can get away with.

At least, that's been my (rather dated) experience with Patpong while staying near Nana.

Soon after mid-night.

Similar to your recollection (rather dated), the ones on the corner would no-way put on their meter, and I would be walking down Silom trying to flag one down... even then getting out again if he refused to go metered! No way to end an evening.

This is exactly the scenario i'm now trying to avoid as my old hotel required a (frustrating) taxi ride back
