Automatic Immigration Clearance Machines at Bangkok Airports

We have these in the UK, but they never work for my passport.

It would be nice not to have to queue at Bangkok Airport though.

It does say Initially, those eligible for machine-processed entry will only be foreign residents of Thailand who pre-registered with the immigration police to use the devices. A little surprising as I would have thought Thai passports could be processed too and that would be more straightforward.

Scheduled to be ready in July 2015.

They have them in the U.S. and, in my experience, seem to work well. That includes the fingerprint scanner. The one in the photo didn't seem to include that feature. I think there is supposed to be an international standard for the machine readable identity info.

Thai Passport owners already have access to similar automatics machine at Bangkok's airports, a few years already I think.

 

I am very curious to know how it will work with stamps ??

To not have an entry or exit stamp could bring you into (temporary) troubles...

A machine generated receipt?

If you come into the states via DFW and you are a us citizen with no checked luggage, you can use the kiosk. Swipe your passport. Answer six easy customs questions at the kiosk. The kiosk then prints a "receipt" with your photo printed on it that you hand in as you exit the room. The agent confirms that you look like the person on the receipt. Can't get any faster than that.

You can. If you have a 'chipped' passport. At Heathrow you just go the the automated desk, place your passport on the 'reader' and you're done. that's it. No questions, no further validation by a human - simples!

I haven't seen them although I have only gone through the Premium Channel for a few years in BKK. Seeing the regular queues for foreigners something to speed it up is required. I was wondering if the percentage there that are foreign residents is sufficient to cause an improvement. I certainly was unimpressed in Manchester having rushed from the aircraft to get ahead and have the gadgetry fail on me and have to join the back of the queue!

I liked the iris reconigition system they had for a few years at most of the major airports in the UK, there was never a queue for the machines and was effortless. No human interaction required with border control staff at all, has to be a plus.

 

This government scrapped it, I think for lack of take up and penny pinching as usual. If it had been bettered advertised and managed then could have been a great success IMHO.

Without enrollment in Global Entry?

With Global Entry you don't even go into immigration at all and you have expedited exit from customs also. And usually TSA Precheck for security.

 

Automated passport readers are not close in terms of what you get for speed with GE.
