Car access limited for Koh Chang?

Recommended Posts

Nam (Nam's Taxi) reported to me that her driver, who was going to pick up some customers she delivered to a Koh Chang hotel a few days ago, was refused to take her car onto the ferry. She was told a new rule, only KC residents can now take their car on the ferry all others need to walk on and take a songtheouw on the other side to get to their destination.

She said she isn't really sure of the real story, will try and confirm tomorrow. It may only apply to the taxi line, protecting local business

It seems to be connected with a new airport being constructed, well, this one story.

Smell like a scam to me, some local bigwig out to make a buck some way or other.

Anyway, be warned, you may not be able to take your car or taxi across. And if you are there, and your cabbie doesn't arrive, contact your booking agent.

Maybe the full story will come out tomorrow..

That sucks. I have been thinking about driving to Ko Chang and taking the car to the island.

Sounds like a scam to force people to use the local transport, rather than an environmental issue.

I've had a taxi driver take me from Bangkok, then refuse to take his taxi on the ferry. It was a scam and I deducted 300 baht from his fee. He wasn't very happy about it, and neither was I.

It wouldn't surprise me, the taxis there are running an overpriced and limited service, I do hope this is not true, not an easy place to get around without your own transport or a rented bike. I have taken my truck over there but it was a long long time ago.

What will be the point of the RORO ferries then? They will lose business.

I doubt they would stop locals taking their cars after a drive from Bangkok, I am guessing they want to stop 'taxis' to support their overpriced local ones.

I wonder if Nam's driver indicated somehow she was operating as a "taxi" and fell under a no-taxi rule?

I've done a quick google search for any information about this, but not seen any restrictions on private passenger vehicles mentioned.

Just got back from a weekend trip with a Pattaya dive shop to Koh Chang and didn't see any evidence of restrictions on vehicles boarding the ferries. The GFE provider met me there and had no problems with her car.

Years too late the island was ruined when they got the roro ferry,

I had some good visits there about 10-11 years ago, pretty sure the roro was in operation although I came back on a passenger only ferry.
