I just bought my tickets for LOS and I have never gotten them so CHEAP....Starting in Charlotte NC {East Coast} and getting to BKK for $816 {USD} is a STEAL in late Jan 2003....Thai Airways wanted $757 from LAX to BKK and even though I work for an Airline and can get to LAX for free..I can't pass up this deal.....!   :o

$816 would have bought you a month at RG and have dosh left over! I work for an airline also and have to think very long about paying for a ticket-even if it's a "deal".Spoiled after 29 years there,I guess.

It's amazing how the airlines like to fuck with the fares on a regular basis.  I always travel on Northwest because i can leave from Milwaukee as opposed to going down to O'hare to catch a flight.  For the past two months Northwest has had the ticket cost from  here to BKK for $1434, certainly too mutt.  So, I managed to get a freebie to San Francisco by using 25,000 of my miles, and then buying a ticket on Korea for $7oo from SFO-BKK and back. However, I needed to stay the night in San Fran, and then suffer a 9 hour layover in Inchon on the way home.  However, this was, IMHO, better than spending  $1434 .  Then last week I'm surfing the NWA site, and I see the flight I usually take from MKE to BKK now selling for $797.  So, I cancel my freebie, take a $100 whipping to cancel my Korean Air ticket, and  I buy the NWA ticket for $797.  It is a real pain in the ass having to do all this juggling, but you have to stay on the websites very regularly to see that you do not get fucked over by the air carriers.  Regards, Jimmy

Last year I asked a travel agent WHY? does the price go up for June,July,August,September. The reason is it is our high season. That 400 dollar jump made me change which months to go. Touchdown in 50 days.         Doorman

For those of you in the states, like me, you should call Ann at Angel Travel.  The toll free number is 800-922-1092 and the regular number is 708-532-4500.  I have flown to Thailand 7 times in the last year and never paid over $900 and usually flown EVA Evergreen Deluxe.  She is very good and you don't have to surf the web day and night to get the best rate.

I'm really not trying to do a one ups-manship type of thing here but those of you who can leave from San Francisco or LA (and probably New York, Seattle, and Vancouver) should really check out the EVA airlines website.

I did a fairly thorough comparison before my last trip in October and discovered that while there might be travel agents that advertise cheap fares, it is murder trying to get them to respond to you especially when they realize you just want a single cheap ticket and no tours.  The Eva site offers a discount for online purchase and if you look a couple of months in advance, you can get the cheap seats.  My ticket for January cost $685.50 including all taxes. Best of all, no hassles, you print out an eticket on your home computer!  Start to finish, 15 minutes!

 

Sometimes Cathay Pacific will offer really cheap fares also but usually only as last minute deal and you can’t count on them.

Last month I travelled from Washingtom DC to Bangkok round trip on NWA for $723.50.  Yesterday, I checked their website and they want $1100+ for a R/T ticket in July.  Maybe I'll wait to book my next flight.

Believe DOORMAN's post has the answer. Discount coach for IAD - BKK round trip can usually be gotten for around 800 except for the airlines high seasons. High seasons are summertime when school is out and about a month during Christmas/New Years. Coach rates go up a few hundred. I've had good service from and recommend a local Thai travel agent, Sarion at 703-528-8861, in the Washington, D.C. area.  She has a travel office in the Comfort Inn at 1211 North Glebe Road, Arlington.  If you haven't already done so, you may want to look at All Nippon Airlines (which is my preference) and Korean Airlines for comparing rates and ambiance.

Another thing to keep in mind when your shopping for the best buy is whether the discounted fare qualifies for airmiles.  As an example, if I can get an airfare for $800 that include airmiles I will take it over a fare of $650 that doesn't include miles.  3 trips get me a 4th free which would make the $800 fare effectively $600.

            Ahhh..yes..I "pilot" those bags from one cart to another....High Season/Chinese New Year, I'd rather "pay" and get the mileage than worry about a "non-rev" status...It's HELL getting stuck in Asia and trying to get back to the Usa.. ???
