HOTEL SAFES?

I 'AM ARRIVING IN JULY IN PATTAYA AND I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THE HOTEL SAFES ARE SECURE AND RELIABLE?

I've never had a problem with hotel safes though be warned that many of the electronic ones require a battery for part of their operation. A fellow guest at the RG experienced battery failure one night and it was 2 hours before some one came down from Bangkok to fix it!

 

Still. he had his tg with him at the time so unlikely that the wait was totally wasted

I reckon most are safe and that the vast majority of "problems" with things going missing is purely down to the booze and / or their TG of the day being a little light fingered.

 

Electronic the way to go I think but the story about the RG is a little worrying especially if heading for the airport. Having to carry a fucking key around all day and night is a pain in the arse.

as another member advised once............after you have set your pin number on the key pad...........wipe the key pad with a cloth................

I never had problems with hotel safes, wether it's thailand or any other country, but I always give them a try before I put anything in them just to make sure they are working properly.

I didn't have any problems with the safe during my stay at the RG but I DID have a problem with the door to my room. I had paid my bill at Reception and had gone back up to my room to bring my cases etc down and I couldn't open the door. So back down to Reception where they re-set the mechanism on the door. Back up again but still no joy.

 

It ended up with the receptionist coming up to the room with a device they must use in emergencies or power cuts,

 

Now that WOULD have been a novel excuse for missing the plane home and for being a day late back to work

Never had a problem with a hotel safe and never talked to anyone who did. If there are no safes in the rooms but they do have the lockboxes at the reception desk, I just use my suitcase with a smal combination lock on it for safeguarding a small stash when having a new girl in the room. Nothing is perfect and you just don't want to have an obvious large amount of cash laying around.

I just bought a large laptop a Compaq with a 15 inch wide screen. Do you think the hotel safes are big enough to hold a large laptop?

The safes that I've used a laptop will not fit. I would lock it up in your luggage as irishman suggusted.

The room safe in RG might be big enough. Last year my 14 inch Sony Vaio did fit, with still some space.

 

But all the other room safes I came across were too small.

I've got a large laptop and the room safes at Sabai Lodge take them with plenty room to spare for all your other crap.

Don't put anything that's irreplaceable in them though. Often these safes are glued or screwed onto a flimsy wardrobe surface or worse just left lying on the floor in a cupboard. These safes are not too heavy and a determined thief will take the whole safe! Don't be flashing a diamond encrusted Rolex in front of the Bellboy and then leave it in your roomsafe when you go swimming, lol. Better still, leave your Bling at home!

I imagine the safe code is a bit more difficult to crack than your TG's email password.

A friend told me some time ago he always uses 1234 as a code for Hotel Safes. Mind you, that was before I read about the thread of the BGs Email passwords here ......

So, the codes are as safe as much as you intend them to be.

 

As I often tend to forget them, I have a routine, by putting in some Name in my Mobile Phone (a Name I know does not belong to any person I know), followed by a number of which the first 4 (after the Area Code) is the Safe Code.

In case the Mobile gets stolen, it does not help me to recover the code, but at least the thief will not be able to guess that this particular name is related to a secret code.

Why is it that one should wipe the key pad.....I would also like to add that 3 of the many trips I had to have my safe opened.. They slip a card behind the key pad, enter some preset codes for that safe/hotel and she's open. The night manager at Res Gard had to call IB, he lives next door, in Patong the Resident Manager had a key to a lock box for the device and had the codes memorized, in BKK at the J.W. Marriott three people came and two people had seperate codes that were both required.

Never lost a thing but I don't use my DOB, PHONE or something else...

 

I feel safe but I also stay in only very good places. I figure 25 USD per day more to feel comfortable is worth it!

 

IF you have the numbers 1-9 plus zero how many combos can you have if you exlude all the same four digits...

10 x10 x10 x10 - 10 ( for the 10 combos off all the same digits) 9990, Wipe those fingers everytime 9960 on those little key pads.....Get ready for a head ache and hopefully you have lots of time!

In-room safes are like exercise machines: If you use them properly, and every day, they won't let you down. It's as simple as that. Check out the tips contained in this thread, and you won't risk a serious amount of cash, or property.

I am curious where the "very good" places are that you stay? Would this group include the Sabai Lodge, the RG, and Sandy Springs? Or, are we talking the Marriott and Dusit level of comfort and expense?

A further thought here - on your last day make sure that you empty the safe well before you are due to leave.

 

Another member had problems with his safe at the RG one night. They had to send to Bangkok to get an engineer to sort out the problem. As he had his tg with him at the time, I'm sure he found a way to pass the time

I just just returned from Pattaya and spent my entire trip at the Residence Garden and had no problems with their safe's. It was large enough to fit my laptop (15" screen), cd player, camera and my papers ie pass port, ticket etc.

Having just bought a lap top, I might decide to bring it with me when I come out next week as it seems that mine is the same size as Tangent's. It would mean not having to use the internet cafe up the road from the RG and allow me to view some of the more risqe photos that have been posted. Might even be able to upload some of my own

 

First though, I'll need to do a search on recommendations for local ISP's.
