Anybody flown AIR ASIA Airlines?

I was just playing around with flights for a possible side trip to Phuket while in LOS. I found that AIR ASIA had round trip flights from BKK for Bt1390 while BANGKOK AIR had flights(same date, roughly same time) for Bt5400. I checked a few differant dates and found the same for all dates. It doesn't seem to be a promotional fare.

I'm a firm believer in the old adage that "if it sounds too good to be true..."

 

What's the deal? Does AirAsia have a poor safety record, old planes, transport livestock in the cabin...? Thanks up front.

Had a sidetrip to Udon Thani with Air Asia lately, for 960 BT return.

No food, no free drinks, seats nothing fancy, only 15 kg luggage, but apart from that, everything just fine, and it left some money in my pocket which was a great relief for the sick family buffalo over there, too

Bought a return ticket online for 960B.

 

600 for the seat.

300 for taxes insurance etc.

Can`t remember what the 60B was for

Just had a look at the confiming email from Air Asia .

 

Fare 600

 

Airport tax,Insurance and Admin Fee 300

 

Vat 63

 

Total fare 963 B.

 

 

Bus fare 800B for a 8hr. trip .

I went with them last week, 500 baht Each Way to Phuket (+tax)

 

No problems and really really pretty cabin crew.

I've flown with them twice now once Bkk to Chiang Mai and once Bkk to KL no problems at all... nice newly refurbished seats with full leather and yes pretty ladies!

One thing that was funny... when i flew with air asia bkk to Udon in May on the evening flight the cabin crew organised a Kareoke competition aong the passengers over the intercom! LOL it would only happen in Thai!

 

Got to say it is a perfeclty decent flight both ways though on time and good aircraft!

My TG has never flown before and I was surfing the net and found the Air Asia site and two tickets to Khorat for 9 (nine) baht each plus tax. I bought them online and have a confirmation email with number and flight details....so, the question is: Are these real tickets and will we have seats on the flight? Has anyone flown with this new airline at these ridiculous prices?

4 of us flew phuket for 500 baht each way plus taxes in May. No problems except for an oder gentleman taking my bag instead of his. Got it back after about 1 hour but really wasn't the airlines fault.

These are promotion prices, usually hard to get.

Don't worry, you will be allright. Just don't expect too much (better: don't expect anything) in terms of service or comfort.

Thanks for the replies...Sunny Valentine, I don't expect much on the short one hour flight. I am just amazed that I got two tickets for virtually nothing...If this works I am looking to fly to Chiang Mai in September with the same TG.

yes ,its easy ,passport and confirmation,no seats allocated.first come first served. expect a long trip back on bus when you get back to Bangkok.parked long way down airfield

Starry, thanks. We plan on taking the day train back to BKK, want to see the scenery and all. You said the plane is parked a long way from the terminal...should I expect a bus ride out to the plane when I leave?

but to contribute something useful as well, i have not personally used air asia but some collegues have, and the stories have been all positive. they operate only one type of aircraft, boeing 737-300 - that keeps their cost down as they only have to keep spareparts for one type of aircraft as well as train their staff only on one type.

 

they are a malaysian company, i think air asia was the first low cost carrier in asia.

 

the 737-300 is, correct me if i am wrong, one of the most reliable aircrafts ever build and i think one of the best sold as well. as to their saftey record, no serious incident since they where founded that i know of. and what the people said who flew it, the planes look very well maintained and the staff is friendly enough. but don't expect any fancy infligh service, there will be none of these, but then, you are using a low cost carrier because of the price and not for the food, and as far as i have heard, they have a couple of stunning ladies in their service hehehe

I flew to Korat with them about 3-4 weeks ago. Absolutely no problems. Everything went without a hitch.

When we landed it was raining and the stewardesses made us wait while someone came out from the terminal to bring us all umbrellas. Catch them doing that at Newcastle Airport

The Boeing 737-300 has been around for 20 years. Boeing is currently producing the -600,-700,-800, and -900 models. But I wouldn't worry to much about the age of these airplanes as long as they have routine maintenance and upgrades. The US Air Force is still flying the B-52's and the last one to come off the production line was in 1962.

emil - but as far as i know, boeing still sells the 300 configuration of the 737 don't they - i mean, the planes at air asia in any case are quite new.

From my 2003 annual report, Boeing doesn't show any -300 on order, only about 800 on backorder of the others. Don't know when they stopped the production of the -300's, but they built over 1100 of them.

In case anyone is interested...I did fly to Khorat on my 9 baht tickets. The flight was an hour late and a flight on Air Asia to Phuket was over 2 hours late...they provided some sort of snack from an airport cafe to those waiting to go to Phuket.

 

The plane, we flew on, had new real leather seats and hardly anyone on the plane...the crew almost outnumbered the passengers. The plane was clean, the crew friendly and we arrived without a scratch. So, Air Asia is for real and my worries about them honoring the ultra cheap tickets were unwarranted. I plan on using them for my Chiang Mai trip in a month or so.

Booked online yesterday, and got Bangkok-Chiang Rai return for 1177 Bt (400 each way + 377 tax).

The website was a little slow, but it all worked, and the charge showed up on my Visa card statement this morning.
