I retired here before turning 50.I hadn't lived in my home country for quite a few years as I worked overseas, and had no desire whatsoever to re-establish a taxation arrangement with them! I would never in a million years invest in a business in Thailand. Firstly, I am retired, so do not wish to start working again. Secondly I think the chances of success are unlikely. You know the adage about making a small fortune in a Thai business! Do you know that Mistys for example, is a financial success, have you talked to Andy? I agree, I know some people can't retire and do nothing, and thrive when set a challenge. More power to them, but I never took well to some of the tricks one likely needs to master to succeed here. And although not specifically a question you asked, define a financially secure situation. Methinks the events of the last 5 years have proven a few wrong on that claim made in 2005!

I would not have been so persevering, considering Bangkok Bank seemed very happy to give me an account. (Work.......????)I was also put off SCB because there always seems to be a Q at the ATMs at BigC South where I often shop, and once when I used one of their machines they limited my withdrawal. Surprised you feel their ATMs work when others don't...can't say I have had many problems with BB ATMs. Now Aeon machines often seem to be out of order, all those damned 'in the know' expats trying to save 150 baht. I agree about Kasicorn, hearing a lot of positive statements regarding their service.

I have always had a slight aversion to using 'wild' animals to entertain people. I can live with performing dogs and useful things like sheep herding. There is a sense of satisfaction when something like this happens, or the aligator clamps down on the guys head. Perhaps why we watch in the first place.

I was also asked for a security deposit.......on top of 2 months rent up front. Likely because I wanted a short lease of 6 months. I got the impression this was a slight afterthought and negotiated it down, otherwise a substantial amount was involved on signing the lease. Negotiation is always possible, had I realised I would actually stay longer than I thought, or had my wits about me I would have negotiated the rent down rather than the deposit, as this would have reduced initial payment too and benefited in the longer term. Whether the owner has insurance or you need to take it out is important... I never did get all my deposit back.

Sorry, I don't read minds so well. Thanks for helping out.USD and Euro TC's are available in the UK. Lovedog seems to suggest to the OP to encash a $100 TC on arrival. I recommend a £100 one. Better not to confuse the issue with mention of $US.
