On most computers the DVD plays in hardware overlay which means that many screen capture applications cannot see it to capture it. Far faster anyway to rip the content from the DVD and convert to a format for say iPod. To rip to copy it there are many applications designed for that. The amount of time you spend is irrelevant. For someone to sniff a data stream and figure out and decode a live SSL connection would take tens of millions of computers working for thousands of years. It is safe if you use SSL connections or a VPN connection. Those offer practically speaking unbreakable connections.
