  1. As Private Eye would say: So farewell then, Gary Coleman. Your catch phrase was, "What's happenin', Willis?" Now what's happenin' is, you're dead. -- E.J. Thribb, 17 1/2
  2. I wonder if Dr. Laura ever answered? Funny that she uses "I've got a new attitude" as her theme song. "The bitch is back" would have been better.
  3. In retrospect I'm not surprised the mighty Habs got past the Washington Choke-it-alls, but to grind it out like that against the defending champs was an amazing feat. Now some more great hockey to come, whether it's against the Flyers or the Bruins. Anybody know where I can watch it online?
  4. The French version is way better than the English version. The English has too much "stand on guard, stand on guard." The French is a much better poem, even though it doesn't make any sense. Car ton bras sait porter lépée, il sait porter la croix "Because your arm knows how to carry the sword, it knows how to carry the cross" WTF?? But it sounds great.
  5. I didn't see a second of it -- had to read the result online -- but what a spectacular comeback! It's rare to come back from a 3-1 deficit, Les Glorieux came back from 3-1 and then from 3-2. Read all about it here! Habs shock Pens, book passage to Eastern Conference finals Montreal Canadiens fans jubilant after win
  6. I was all set to watch the FIRST game of the Habs vs Pens and now I'm told they've already played three games, none of which went well, and are staring at elimination. So much for staying up to date.
  7. Thank you very much. I was surprised to see the Caps choke like that. Not that I managed to catch the game, mind you, it's just that the Caps were the most famous choke artists in the NHL when I was in high school. I guess, like the old beer commercial says, the good things in life never change. Now when and where can I see the mighty Montreal Canadiens play their next opponents? Edit: 8 am Tuesday morning Pattaya time, looks like. Cherry Bar, right?
  8. (This is now going around the Interwebs. One example is on slashdot.com.) Dear United Kingdom, You should have stopped to consider that there is no letter "C" in the Icelandic alphabet [wikipedia.org] before issuing your demand.
  9. Happy Birthday mate. Was I there? It seems so long ago... Hope to be back in town just after Songkran...
  10. They should play in tiny lycra shorts and tank tops, like the beach volleyball team does.
  11. Dungie, I'll be in touch shortly. Of course I'll be drinking Blanche de Chambly, the excellent wheat beer brewed by Unibroue in Quebec. I was absolutely stunned to see it on stock in Shinjuku, you can scarcely get your hands on it in Canada. Just found out while looking for the above image that Unibroue is now owned by Sapporo, which also owns the pub in Shinjuku. So that explains that.
  12. To be fair though, MGOW, Britain isn't a northern country. Oh, wait a minute...
  13. Joe, the US team was disqualified from the seal clubbing event because they didn't wait for the tears to well up in the seals' eyes before they clubbed them to death. Some people say the event is cruel, but it's not as cruel as making people sit through nine ends of curling. Gman, if you're looking to give your liver a break, Pattaya is the wrong place for you.
  14. Nice one SBJ! By the way, how come there's an Essex, a Wessex, a Sussex and a Middlesex, but no Norsex? I'm just sayin'.... and what's wrong with having a little more sex anyway?
  15. And we're champion drinkers too!
  16. Well the Olympics ended with a thrilling victory in ice hockey for Canada vs the United States. Sidney Crosby, normally better known for his crybaby antics than for his (excellent) skills on ice, scored the final goal to win the gold medal game in overtime, in a real nail-biter. It was a great year for the United States, which hauled in almost 40 medals, but Canada won 14 gold medals, way more than anyone else, which proves there's got to be some good from living in a frozen wasteland. Another great story was South Korea, which punched way above its weight, bringing home more medals than China, Japan, Sweden or France, and more gold medals than even Austria and Russia. Which leaves only one question: Curling WTF??
  17. Paul, just a quick protip: Use candles made of tissue paper, that way the cake won't collapse under the weight like last year. Happy Birthday mate, wish i was there, it's snowing up here in Japan.
  18. The thing is that, though many THINGS are as expensive as at home or even more so -- English-language newspapers and magazines are expensive, beer is not particularly cheap, etc etc -- PEOPLE are cheap in LOS. Cheap labor makes a lot of things really convenient. Back home, if you were sitting in a bar and wanted a pack of smokes, could you pay the waitress £1 to go out and buy it for you? Cleaning services, repairs, massage and of course boom-boom are all cheap, and that's where "living like a king" kicks in. Dunno if £20 a day would do it, though.
  19. In Thailand, if you do not own the dirt beneath the business, it's not an investment. And even if you do, it's probably not an investment either.
  20. Love your bar's new logo Adam, but I think it's already been taken by an outfit called "Photobucket."
  21. Ray, you make a fair point about the unfortunate timing, but the best conditions in the universe won't help if people don't want to be there. I enjoyed the old Lennie's and later Shooters and have many great memories of the joint. Did wander into Mirage a couple of times but didn't see anybody I knew (except some of the horizontal dancing partners) and it never really grew on me.
  22. Paul, see you sooner rather than later. Hope to catch Sparkydave in a few days
  23. Hey Paul, you have a PM. Go clean out your nasty box.
  24. Pete, I second the comment about the Eggs Benedict, I'll be back in town soon and I love Eggs Benedict but haven't tried yours. Might start coming in for brekkies
  25. I knew you'd come up with something good after six days!
