Filing Requirements for US Citizens with Assets Abroad (FBAR & 8938)
MM replied to Trvlr's topic in Expat Issues
What I mean by saying the above is that the FBAR is separate from the IRS tax return filing. It's reported differently and has a different reporting date. But this all started with my statement that I didn't have to report accounts on my tax return to the IRS as an expat unless over the stated amounts you listed. The FBAR is a different story and I acknowledged that in my reply to Gary regarding his accountant. I was ONLY describing the IRS tax return filing treatment. From your link: That is what I was saying with respect to Turbotax treatment. Clear? BTW, thanks for bringing the FBAR reporting to the forefront though, even if it wasn't in response to my tax return statement... -
Brooklyn Diner on Soi BuaKhao - UPDATED Jan. 12, 2015

That bacon is cooked nicely, IMHO..just the way I'd like it. This is my bacon preference at the Residence Garden where I asked them specifically not to cook it their usual way (seriously over cooked) So, it's not a Thai thing, it's a matter of taste and preference. -

trvlr, once again, if you'd read my post you'd see that I specifically said the exemption only applied to ex-pats filling a tax return form 8938. I also said that FBAR reporting had no such exemption and was for amounts over $10,000 BUT that is not reported on your tax return..which was the original point of difference between Gary and me. Note that both of us are ex-pats. Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk -

That's exactly why I asked if you'd read my post. It's in there. You keep telling me to "take a second look" which i find somewhat dismissive since you've not addressed what I've said at all. Once again, I am saying, for an expat, the $10,000 threshold does not apply. You're not being an expat and admittedly not investigating this exemption, does NOT mean i should take a "second look". Here's the relevant quote from the IRS: Do I need to file Form 8938, “Statement of Specified Foreign Financial Assets If you are a taxpayer living abroad you must file if: You are filing a return other than a joint return and the total value of your specified foreign assets is more than $200,000 on the last day of the tax year or more than $300,000 at any time during the year; or You are filing a joint return and the value of your specified foreign asset is more than $400,000 on the last day of the tax year or more than $600,000 at any time during the year. Trvlr, yes I'm saying my post is different from yours in that there is no requirement to report amounts over $10,000 on your tax return if you're an expat. Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk -

I wonder if you read my previous post regarding expat reporting to IRS (Form 8938) and FBAR to the Treasury Department. -
I gave you a + to help out. Did you have a condom on your camera?

It's all very complex...as I said, I was just going on the question/answer driven Turbotax results...further research found this, which is the form that is reported to the IRS on your tax return... It seems Congress added another form, the FBAR, which has to be reported to the Treasury Department itself (not the IRS)..like who ever does that? And the threshold for this reporting is $10,000 .. I don't know if there are exemptions for expats or what..it's all a mess and new to me, but the penalties are draconian (welcome to AMERIKA)... I guess your accountant is preparing your Treasury FBAR form too.. -

[sarcasm /on] Well, against your accountant what do I know? All I know, is that I was using Turbotax, and when it asked if I had foreign bank accounts, I answered yes. And when it asked if I lived outside the USA for..what is it..339 days I think, I said "yes". And then it only asked me if I had 200K in the bank now or had had 300K in the bank during the last year, to which I replied "No", and nothing was reported because of that. But those turkeys at Intuit probably aren't up on the law, eh? [sarcasm /off] -

A lot of discussion that the regulations wrt USA guys having foreign bank accounts are onerous enough that some banks just will not offer them.kasikorn have been mentioned. A few years old but discussed here. Shilo is a U.S. guy, and he's been a proponent of this solution. BTW, just did my USA taxes for the first time since they started "cracking down" on holders of foreign bank accounts....seems you don't have to document anything after all, IF you are a full-time expat, UNLESS you have more than 200K USD at the time of reporting or more than 300K USD anytime during the year in a foreign bank. That leaves most US ex-pats I know out of having to report. Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk -

Yes, when I connected with TRUE 3G it was fine...3BB and AIS, no way...until just the last few hours.
-
I do hope it gets better for you. We can't do without your fine pictures!

No heartbleed here. Careful with those words.

I don't know..with some of the stories I've heard about the Thai Navy, they might be dining on turtle soup.
-
The problem might be resolved. I've turned off my USA VPN and am accessing the forum as before, via 3BB, and it seems fine and responsive now. Anyone else noticing it's gotten better?
-
Very nice. That looks like a good way to get out of the madness of Pattaya.

Patna..it might be the server farm having network problems over some links. The server itself is working fine...I am using a USA VPN address (different network path) and it is totally responsive. There is absolutely nothing I can do about network issues to the server location (not in the short term, anyway). I'm going to wait until they finish up with their maintenance at the server farm and then see if the problem continues. It should have been finished last night, but as I said, they extended it a day, so it might be a bit more.
